Hi,
Probably a stupid question, but should I renew my license ON the date it expires or do it about a week before? I haven't had to renew one in Colorado before and I can't find anything useful on the DMV site so advice much appreciated.

I have to go into the DMV office in person too (due to various paperwork issues) so I can't do it online either.

I'm assuming you can go in before. Kind of like renewing the tags on the car.

I haven't actually gone in since we first moved here since I did it online. I seriously need a new picture!

You can go in any time before your birthday/expiration date.

I have never renewed mine online before... I hope to do that this year!

Just FYI: Depending on when your birthday falls, I'd recommend avoiding DMV offices on the first or last few days of each month. The crowds [of registration renewal procrastinators - hehe!] tend to be larger then.

I helped develop that online app, so please do give it a try! Provided you meet the eligibility requirements, it should be a breeze and a LOT better than visiting your local DMV office.

Well, my birthday is the very last day of April so I guess I'd better rethink that date

I CAN'T do it online because I changed my legal status in the US last year and therefore I have to go into the office to show them my new documentation. If the system would allow for change in residency to be entered online I would do it today!

Don't wait till the last week! The SAVE system used by the DMV here to verify legal status has some glitches, and you might be required to visit the DMV in Lakewood to get approval first.

I didn't need the approval when I got my license 5 years ago but I'm not arguing the point. I'm just curious why Lakewood and what's different about that office to my local one? Is it the DMV HQ for Colorado or something?

SAVE only went into effect 2 years ago out here, if I remember correctly

If your legal status cannot be verified through the system, your documents will be forwarded to USCIS. The Lakewood office is where you have to go to submit your documents and wait for 10 days for verification. I don't really know what is special about that office.

Oh happy day. Well, I'd better start bright and early. Do you know if it's the office on Kipling Street or Peoria?

I wanted to use the online renewal, but since I don't need glasses (and therefore don't get my eyes checked very frequently), no can do. I wonder how many people lie about that on the online form to avoid going to the DMV....
