I was watching this old fight and I couldn't believe that the referee didn't step in and save Machen from further punishment. Incredible. He was out on his feet and the ref just stood there until he was laid out and prone on the canvas, unconscious.

Machen died mysteriously at a young age of 40.

It is sometimes tough to watch some of the older fights for just this reason. I love a competitive fight and I respect a guy with heart who is willing to fight against losing odds, but I do not want to watch a slaughter taking place. This reminds me of the Paret/Griffith fight, watching poor Benny Paret take some tremendous punches while lying helpless against the ropes. I certainly don't want a Richard Steele in there who stops fights too early, but I'm glad boxing took measures to protect fighters in the ring and prevent senseless beatings.

Coolhand68 is right. Regarding his comment of "a slaughter taking place", that's pretty much what happened to "Kid" Paret as he was hung up against the ropes in an absolute defenseless position while Griffith got off at least a couple dozen shots at him (some say a lot more.)

Thanks for the thread and youtube Lexus!
