As expected, Kovalev got the win. It was good to see him go some rounds. Cedric Agnew was very defensive minded keeping a peek-a-boo guard for most of the bout which made it hard for Kovalev to look spectacular. In a testament to his power though, he wound up stopping Agnew in the 7th with a jab...to the body. Agnew went to the hospital to check for a broken rib & nose. It was a good test for Kovalev as he got butted, cut, hit low, etc. His post-fight comments about Adonis Stevenson were

Agnew was able to come out that peek-a-boo guard and clip Kovalev with some nice counter shots. Agnew's work rate just wasn't high enough. Kovalev did seem to get anxious and flustered a couple of times. I used to think that Kovalev would be an overwhelming favorite if he and Stevenson were to ever meet. I'm not so sure now. I'd still favor him, but it's a lot closer than I originally thought. He's there to be hit. Stevenson also has tremendous power and showed off some nice boxing skills against Tavoris Cloud. As slick as BHop is, I think he could give Kovalev fits at this point too.

He's one of the most exciting fighters now, IMO, and a fight vs Stevenson would be an awesome non-ppv main event.

Stevenson would be ideal of course, but boxing politics may get in the way. There could be fights out the for Kovalev though. Jean Pascal seems an obvious choice to me. Ward and GGG down the road could be interesting as well.

Too bad he is not going to get a big fight. Looks like Hopkins and Stevensen are going to fight each other, leaving Sergei out in the cold.

Well BHop has an assignment tomorrow that he has to get past. That being said, if Stevenson were to get in the ring with Hopkins, it could help to make him a better and more crafty boxer, win or lose.
