Here's my round by round commentary after re-watching the fight.

GGG starts with a jab 8 seconds in. Both fighters reluctant to throw. GGG moving forward while Canelo circles. Canelo moves out of range from a GGG jab at the 2:34 mark. GGG shoots a couple of more jabs without intention of landing but instead to measure his range. GGG scores jab to the forehead but it's a light jab. GGG fires jab, Canelo pulls back and counters with his own stiff jab. GGG fires a right hand in response, which Canelo easily avoids, escaping from the ropes by moving to his left. GGG continues to move forward and lowers his level to shoot his jab downstairs. Hard to tell whether this lands or not. GGG feints the jab upstairs but shoots it to the body. Again, it's hard to tell whether it gets there but I'll call this one a score. Action moves away from the ropes and back towards the middle.

GGG fires a jab, which Canelo slips and fires his own right into left side of GGG's body. That's a score for Canelo. Canelo feints the left hook and GGG backs off. GGG uses his lead hand to probe Canelo's defense; Canelo flashes some good upper body movement. GGG fires a jab followed by a right hand, but it appeared to land on Canelo's glove. GGG fires 2 jabs, which Canelo slips. GGG fires a jab; slipped. Fires 2 more jabs; slipped. Gennady continues to put his lead hand into Canelo's guard. GGG jab to the forehead; score. GGG jab to the forehead; score. Jabs are landing, but not being thrown with a greal deal of conviction. Canelo counters with a hard jab that barely misses. GGG jabs, Canelo steps back. Canelo pops a stiff jab that snaps GGG's head back with 1:18 left in the round. GGG immediately counters upstairs with a right, which Canelo weaves and counters with a left to the body that lands on GGG's hip/belt.

GGG shoots a jab to the right of Canelo's head, which he parries. GGG fires another jab out of range. Both guys fire jabs that miss. GGG fires jab to move Canelo back. Not sure it lands. GGG fires a 1-2 combination but Canelo uses head movement to evade. GGG tries a similar combination, this time with a jab downstairs and a right upstairs. Success. GGG shoots a couple of more jabs that miss. Canelo fires another pistol jab that lands right on the button and follows with a left hook that misses the mark badly. GGG doubles up on his jab, misses with the first and scores with the second, pushing Canelo backwards. Canelo feints a jab, then feints a left hook. Canelo uses GGG's own combo; a jab to the body and a right upstairs and lands both. GGG backs off, Canelo sells a feint to the body, GGG continues to back up. GGG fires a jab that scores, both guys fire jabs that miss, then GGG shoots a right hand that misses over the top.

Both guys missing jabs with both likely landing one. GGG lunges with a big right hand, but Canelo pulls back and scores with an upper cut to the body. This is the same tactic he used against Cotto and seems to be a bread and butter shot of his. GGG responds immediately with somewhat of a wild left which Canelo easily avoids. GGG jab to the head, score, Canelo jab to the body, score. Canelo 1-2 combination scores through GGG's guard and backs him up. Canelo throws another 1-2 and again scores both shots. Backs GGG up towards ropes. Last 20 seconds. GGG fires jab and scores. Canelo throws right, misses and moves. Canelo lands a solid jab. GGG fires jabs with one grazing. A couple of weak, miscellaneous jabs get fired to end the round.

This was a pretty clear Canelo round to me. So far, Canelo leads 1-0.

BTW, you can watch the fight here. British commentary. Seems to be a recognition GGG lost the first round. Commentator says GGG not panicked, but surprised by fluency of Canelo's punching.

Round 2

GGG opens with a jab that either missed by a centimeter or just got to Canelo's face. GGG shoots a jab 7 seconds in that Canelo slips. GGG fires two more jabs that miss. Canelo is moving and staying out of range. GGG continues to stalk him. Couple of short jabs by GGG that don't land. These are more range finders. GGG fires a jab that lands on Canelo's right glove, Canelo shoots a jab that lands 6 inches short. Both guys step towards middle of ring; both shoot jabs that miss. GGG jab that nearly lands; Canelo responds with a jab to the body and a right hook. GGG blocks the right hook. Both guys miss jabs; Canelo slips the jab and ties GGG up at the 2:25 mark. Canelo feints upper cut; GGG is thinking about this. Both guys shoot jabs that miss. GGG lands a light jab; Canelo follows with 2 punches that don't land cleanly. GGG backs up and shakes his head. GGG counter jab; possibly score. GGG jab; score. Canelo comes back with a left to the body (lands) and a right (partially blocked). GGG jabs and scores.

Canelo throws an effective spear jab into GGG's solar plexus. GGG covers and moves back. Canelo fires jab and GGG splits it and lands his own. Canelo feints jab upstairs and lands another one to GGG's stomach. Canelo gets GGG on the backfoot temporarily. For now, action is in the middle of the ring. GGG shoots a jab that bounces off Canelo's left glove. Canelo throws a strong left hook that lands on GGG's right glove. GGG sticks out lead hand, Canelo goes underneath to throw a big right hand that misses. Canelo fires a 1-2 to the body and lands with a right hand. GGG moves forward with his own 1-2 but Canelo moves back. He feints the upper cut; GGG cools off. GGG lands a jab; Canelo counters with jab but misses badly. GGG fires couple of jabs and a left hook but misses. GGG jab; score. Canelo jab; score. Canelo changes level and lands a solid right into GGG's stomach and follows with a left hook that misses. GGG falls back. Canelo feints left upper cut but sticks a good left hook in GGG's right side. Canelo fires a big left hook that probably doesn't land clean but gets G's attention and forces him back.

GGG splits the jab. 1:16 left in the round. GGG shoots a flicker jab and then a short right upper cut. Score. GGG throws a left hook that misses badly. Canelo crisp jab; score. GGG shoots a jab; misses. Canelo shoots jab; GGG ducks underneath it. Canelo fires one shot to stomach that lands clean and a shot on the right side of GGG's body that we can't see given camera angle. GGG left hook; weaved. GGG upper cut; Canelo steps back. More of a feint. Missed jabs. Both guys land grazing jabs. Canelo lands with a jab upstairs and a right to the body. About 10 seconds of missed shots though Canelo manages to land a short left hook that doesn't do any damage. 30 seconds left.

GGG backing Canelo up with 1-2s that are not landing. Canelo content to back up. Canelo backs towards ropes; meaningless jabs get thrown. Canelo backs GGG up with an upper cut that misses. GGG bounces right back and pushes Canelo towards the corner. 10 seconds left. GGG throws a jab; Canelo slips to his right. Canelo counters with a jab that lands flush. GGG responds immediately with a right hand, but Canelo shoulder rolls it and lands a big upper cut to GGG's gut that causes GGG to grimace. Hardest punch in the fight so far IMO. Canelo dances out the remaining seconds.

Canelo, 2-0.

Round 3. This is it for tonight. Commentators saying GGG is being too predictable. I agree. They note that Canelo "danced back to his corner pleased with his work." British commentary always seems to differ dramatically from HBO and Showtime. Commentators note that there aren't many clean-landing punches.

Canelo jab to start Round 3. Score. GGG jab; blocked. GGG jab score; GGG is really going on the hunt. Looking more intent than in previous rounds. Canelo jab; miss. GGG slips to his left and fires left hook that misses around the backside of Canelo. GGG follows with short left hook that connects. GGG jab; score. GGG splits Canelo's jab score; follows with another jab and a right that miss. GGG short hook; score. Canelo jab; score. GGG tries to counter and misses. More of a flurry than anything. Canelo with a jab downstairs and a right upstairs; they don't land. GGG puts his lead hand in Canelo's face a couple of times. 2 scores. Canelo throws a 3 shot combination: jab (misses); left hook to body (lands); left hook upstairs (misses). GGG jab (blocked) followed by Canelo right hand (misses). GGG follows with his own right hand to counter, but Canelo is a little too quick and leans out to his right to land a solid hook to GGG's right side. This makes GGG wobble just a little bit. Way more punching this round.

Canelo 1-2 combo. Clean right hand, lands flush on GGG's temple. Forces GGG to reset. GGG fires jab; Canelo slips to left and misses upper cut. Missed jabs. Action is in center of ring with both men in high guard. Canelo throws a hook and gets countered with a hook. Score, GGG. A few punches miss from both men but Canelo finds success with a jab, right to the body and hook upstairs. GGG has to reset again. GGG throws a right hand, Canelo slips it and throws an upper cut to the body followed by a left hook. Neither lands clean. GGG has his back near the ropes. GGG throws a left hand that gets blocked very cleanly by Canelo's right glove. Makes an audible thudding sound. Bunch of missed, non-committal shots in center of ring. Canelo backs GGG up with a big looping right that barely misses. Canelo jab to the face and body. Score and score. Canelo throws a left hook to the body; nicely covered by GGG (no score). Some light tapping going on, Canelo misses a left hook over the top, but connects with a right hand that lands flush on GGG's cheek and forces him to hop back. 1:25 left in the round.

Center of the ring. GGG jab; score. GGG jab; score. Canelo hook; blocked. GGG hook; blocked. Canelo against ropes but backs GGG off with the jab, fights back to middle of ring. Canelo clean left hook over GGG's right hand; score. Canelo stiff jab; score. GGG is heading towards ropes. GGG left hook; blocked. Both men are in the center of the ring. Another left hook from GGG; blocked. GGG heads towards ropes again. GGG jab, sneaky left hook that catches Canelo's chin. GGG spins out from ropes and gets to center ring. GGG solid right to the body (score) and left to body (misses). Canelo left to body; blocked. 50 seconds left. Canelo walking GGG down a bit to get to clinch; gets to clinch and fires upper cut through GGG's guard; score. GGG responds immediately with left hand but Canelo moves out of range. Canelo moves back towards ropes. Some wild misses from both men. Clear misses, not close misses. After being tied up for a bit, Canelo puts his hands down and goes against the ropes. Canelo moving around the ring and slipping. GGG throws a solid left to Canelo's head while he's against the ropes but it lands on Canelo's glove.

This was a close round. Could go either way. Likely would have been a clear Canelo round had he not gotten cute on the ropes towards the end of the round. This was the first round GGG was truly in, but I'm inclined to give it to Canelo because it's clear at this point that Canelo's shots are having an effect on Golovkin. Not an effect as "he's hurt," but you can tell when GGG gets tagged pretty good because he always tries to tag Canelo right back. GGG gets caught with a straight right, he instinctively comes back with a straight right, and Canelo seems to be onto this.

Canelo, 3-0.

Are these punches you counted yourself or stats you're pulling from Compubox? The reason I'm asking is because Compubox is just some dude who counts punches during the fight. That's why it's good to watch the videos in slow motion to count the number that actually landed. Wilson Kayden used to do this but he's unfortunately gone MIA.

I watched the 1st round twice and I gave it to GGG, so did HBO Harold Lederman, Dan Rafael for ESPN and other sites.......all 3 judges gave it to Canelo but its fine, still GGG should have won worst case scenario 115-113.

the 7th round which GGG clearly won, the judge that scored it a tie 114-114 gave it to Canelo, the other 2 judges and everybody else including Judge Byrd gave it to GGG.....if that judge scored the 7th round right, GGG wins by majority decision regardless of that whacko Judge Byrd scores.

GGG got screwed by 2 judges.....its just Byrd scorecard was so whacked that it shadows the other Judge tie score by giving the 7th round to Canelo when it fact GGG won that round clearly.

I just wanted to write this but I noticed that you had already done it . This is unreal and blatant corruption to give 7th round to Alvarez . Even Byrd gave that one to Golovkin . This Trella guy was already there looking for a way to fix this fight . This should be a criminal case . It just shows that you can do litteraly everything in boxing without a shred of consequences .

It seems to me that in every big fight Alvarez's team has the judges bought . He had ridiculous scorecards in his fights against Cotto , Lara , Mayweather , Trout and now in the fight against Golovkin . Basically in all of his big fights . It really makes it impossible for me to ever root for this guy .

Harold Lederman and Dan Rafael are irrelevant at this point now that we have the benefit of YouTube and slow motion. Besides, the commentators can have too much influence on the viewer's perception of the fight.

Compubox gives GGG 2 power punches in that round. I had him landing 1. Canelo's 5 power punches sound about right. From my write up.

Quote:
GGG lunges with a big right hand, but Canelo pulls back and scores with an upper cut to the body. This is the same tactic he used against Cotto and seems to be a bread and butter shot of his. GGG responds immediately with somewhat of a wild left which Canelo easily avoids. GGG jab to the head, score, Canelo jab to the body, score. Canelo 1-2 combination scores through GGG's guard and backs him up. Canelo throws another 1-2 and again scores both shots. Backs GGG up towards ropes.
I actually counted 6 power punches for Canelo because there was also this.

Quote:
GGG fires a jab, which Canelo slips and fires his own right into left side of GGG's body.
The only way to score this round for GGG, imo, is if you place that much of an emphasis on volume. And even then, the volume is mostly jabs, and they were not landing that cleanly. By my count, he landed only one power punch, which was a right hand upstairs that was part of a 1-2 combination (jab to the body, straight to the head). I did not give him credit for the earlier power punch because it landed on Canelo's glove, which is evident using slow motion replay.

GGG fought his last two fights very differently from most. Here is the number of power punches he threw in the first 2 rounds.

vs Canelo - 23
vs Jacobs - 17
vs Brook - 67
vs Wade - 62
vs Lemieux - ?
vs Monroe - 76
vs Rubio - 45
vs Geale - 61
vs Rosado - 47

Now some might say this only proves that GGG is aging and that he can no longer maintain the same work rate he once did as a younger fighter. Perhaps, but GGG fought Monroe just 2 years ago. And he had no issue throwing nearly 70 power punches against Kell Brook in the first 2 rounds. He either aged significantly between last summer and this summer or Jacobs and Canelo were much tougher than his previous opponents.
