I've been a laser tech for 14 years, DoD field. Ive always heard about Bozeman, even known some people that have moved there for laser work (we are not in contact).

How is the laser work up there? How is the pay relative to cost of living?

I do enjoy smaller cities, lesser population is an attraction for myself.

There are electronics positions in Bozeman. I would not call it a laser capital. We're not talking Singapore or even Austin. The positions pay relatively well but the cost of living is unreal. You'll be paying about 300k for a starter home in the city with high property taxes and an 7% income tax on all income over 18k. Montana does not have a sales tax but resort towns are allowed a 3% sales tax. Bozeman does not qualify as its population is too high but they tried to change that this year. They will likely attempt it again in two years when the legislature reopens.

It's not a laser capital but it does have a lot of small companies in the optics industry -- a surprising amount for a town of its size. The salary to CoL ratio probably sucks, but can't be as bad as in Silicon Valley, Boulder, Seattle etc.

@flyingcat2k Thanks for this information. It has helped me too with the information I was looking for. As the business Real Estate Pipeline is more focused in the area.
