It would be over 11 years old so you could permanent register it:

Light Vehicle Registration and Fees - MT Dept of Justice

Permanent registration, MCA 61-3-562 – The owner of a light vehicle 11 years old or older may choose to permanently register the vehicle. This registration does not need to be renewed as long as ownership is unchanged. Fees collected at the time of permanent registration are:
  • $87.50 registration rate
  • $5 Montana Highway Patrol Salary and Retention Fee
  • county option tax, $4 optional state park fee, certain special plate fees and, for light trucks, the gross vehicle weight (GVW) fees
Where they get you is the "county option tax". I think for my 64 Ford I paid 250 or so and my 94 Suburban was a little over 300 if I remember correctly for permanent tags.

How does that compare to the previous annual fee for each one??

From what I understand, for vehicles less than 11 years old, they base the tax every year on the manufacturers suggested retail price and then calculate in a depreciation value (forget applying what you actually PAID for the vehicle ). So for our modest, no frills 2009 Dodge vehicle I pay something like over 300 a year to keep it registered.... Yikes! Seems like in Oregon I could get a 5 year registration for less than that!

Gettin' off light. I've heard of CA plates that cost over (sit down already) $1200/year, mainly cuz the vehicle was in screaming distance of "new". CA dings me $165 for my 32 year old pickup (up from $35 25 years ago, or about double the inflation rate even if the truck was still the same value, tho most of that is the "now you're an 18-wheeler to be gouged" fee).

Ha! I can beat your $1200- When we had to move down here to LA, they wanted $1500 and some change to register our no-frills '07 Ford F-150 pickup for one year! They love to tax the he** out of folks down here...
