Melbourne area good for young guys? (Tampa: apartments, skateboarding, rent)

hey i have been reading around on the forums and basically everyone says melbourne is safe and family friendly (which is good, but i dont really care bout that type of answer), im kinda wondering what the nightlife is like, and what their is to do during weeknights besides the beach. So basically me and my friends (19, 20 from tampa and orlando) are gonna be moving somewhere on the spacecoast (looking at melbourne becuase the rent seems affordable, the city sounds not big like tampa but not small either and we are young guys so you know we dont have money..=/) and are going to BCC. What areas would you recommend for young guys who skimboard daily, surf occasionally, love music(not rap), like to go out and have fun and party.. We would like an area thats not all old people, or the richy type.. But dont want an area that is HOOD, rundown is okay though as long as its not Cracked out. any areas just to completely avoid?.. Also what is the overall atmosphere like in the melbourne area, we are laid back, nice, and friendly people but we just dont wanna end up in an area that is families, and cop/hick infested... Oh and if there are some good clubs you know about itd be cool if you could name some for us to check out. any help would be very much appreciated! thanks

You might be bored with the night life here compared to Tampa. Beach will be better though. <g> My son is a surfer so spends most time at the beach, skateboarding, playing golf, and basketball with his friends. Club scene is almost nill and ya'll aren't old enough for the bars so movies and private parties are about it. Ya'll also might think the area is cops/hicksville because they are sort of out there.
Lots of apartments are safe and in the $650-$1000 range to have a 2 or 3 bedroom place. Going to BC Melbourne-check with places along Wickam Road maybe.
