Gated communities are a fairy tale in terms of added safety. Some will tell you they feel safer but that's about the extent of it. The gates don't protect from break-ins caused by delinquent teens who live in the neighborhood, which is a major cause of most break-ins here despite what one might see in security system TV commercials. I would recommend looking beachside (east of the Intracoastal Waterway) as those areas tend to be the safest. I would also consider a condominium which gives you flexibility to rent your unit as a vacation rental when you're not there should you want to offset the cost of owning it. They're also more secure than a single family home. Check out Cape Canaveral Beach, Cocoa Beach and Indian Harbour Beach. Good luck!

For condos Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach or Indian Harbour Beach. For detached housing I'd look into Titusville (Hickory Lake/Hickory Green, La Vira/ Las Verdes), Rockledge (north of Wall Blvd, east of Murrell, south of Eyster Blvd and east of Fiske Blvd) or Melbourne (the Suntree area south of Viera Boulevard, east of Murrell and starting a mile or so north of Wickham).
