Default Most economical place to get carpet

We need to carpet a small room (maybe 12x12?) and I have no clue where to go. At home, I had contacts in place and knew a contractor who got carpet for my entire condo for $800 and installers for $500. I don't have contacts like that here, but I was wondering if any of you had a recommendation of a good place to use that wouldn't rip you off. We will be in need of painters for the interior of a house. At home I had a quote of $5000 to paint my condo and I had some contacts who did it (wonderfully) for $800 including paint. I took off all of the switchplates and had things prepped for them and cleaned up afterward to help them. I know I can't expect that here, but any suggestions would be great. Thanks! I know there must be people who do good work and are wanting extra jobs. It's hard to move to a new place and start from scratch.

I dont know of any offhand as I dont live in the area any more but I know Home Depot runs a special for like $99 carpet installed in 1 room and the whole house for not much more. Thats like their basic "if they dont have to move all your furniture" type of price. Not sure about their actual carpet prices or how competitive they are but I'd imagine they are close to the figures you mentioned.

Beyond that, I recall a place on 192 that did a real nice job for a decent price on tile. I want to say about $2000 for the entire main living area including tile, labor, and disposal of old carpet. Wish I could recall the name for you but honestly, this was about 8+ years ago so they may not even be the same company (or in business) any more.

Craig's list might not be a bad place to find general help/ You could always ask for references as well (just to weed out the knuckleheads).

Home Depot as well as Lowes, have a lot of extras. When you figure those in, you save nothing on installation.

Umm, not really. I had my 10x18 sunroom carpeted with Home Depot. I chose an nice "off the roll" twist-style nylon selection in store, went with their best padding and with install ($79) the whole deal was around $450. I couldn't have purchased a decent rug for that price. I highly recommend Home Depot for carpeting.

Thanks for the input. We need to do the room sort of quickly so I probably will go with Home Depot. I just cringe knowing that at home I could probably do it for 1/4 of the cost. Argh. Moves due to job outsourcing sucks.

Sorry to hear of your unplanned move. Best of luck in your new home and with the job hunt! I wouldn't fret too much over the carpet as I think you're maybe over exaggerating the cost differential. The carpet off the roll was like $4.99 a yard with a $79 install and choice of pad (I got the most expensive). I can't imagine what kind of quality you'd get for much less than that.

That comes to $18.75 per yard for carpet, pad and labor. Kinda high for off the roll.

Not really for quality off the roll, versus not quality off the roll, as well as the most expensive padding. I like to shop price and factor quality versus only price. It's called value shopping...

The weight is a "25" if that makes sense and the pad is the Scotchgard 1/2"....
