The salary has tripled since I came down in the 70s. ;-) I used to say I got paid in sunshine. It made it very easy for me to be a SAHM with my kids for many years and decide to sub instead of full time teach when I returned to teaching.
Nice link! Brevard is 30th of 67, so slightly above the median. You're right... very close to the middle!

Salaries may have tripled since the 70s but the Consumer Price Index has nearly quintupled over the past 40 years.

So the amount of 'pay' in nominal dollars is higher — but it buys even less now than it did then.

QUESTION: How do salaries compare in other occupations and professions?

I'm a technical writer by trade, with over 30 years experience... mostly in aerospace/aviation and IT. I can accurately state that the salaries/rates in FL rank about 25% below the national average in my field.

Thank God for telecommuting and employers that "get it". I am working for a California company getting paid a California rate

I'm in non-clinical health care... I am looking to leave Brevard.. Florida, all together. For my field, I definitely bring home a lot less than national average.. by about $8-10K annually. Most of my friends here in Brevard are teachers, and I often hear complaints of the pay, which I do not disagree with; They tell me they are "making it" thanks to husbands with engineering or other well-paying STEM industry jobs that are around here.

You have to look at "total compensation." Typically, health benefits and pension benefits are extremely good for teachers. Also, you only work essentially 180 or so days a years. It's a tough job but there are a lot of tough jobs where you don't get the summers off or weeks off at Christmas and Spring Break. You can also supplement income in the summer with temp jobs.

Yea, if you compare it to like Marion or Polk counties were there are no jobs to pay anything.

even better than places like Daytona beach. There is a decently educated workforce in Brevard thanks to an abundance of defense, aerospace and communication companies

I hear NASA recently announced a project that will create 2,000-3,000 jobs in the area. Not sure what its all about, but that can only improve the local economy and potentially attract other jobs as well. This normally creates demand and higher wages, depending on the your profession. As a property owner in Brevard, I am excited to hear this.
