My fiancé and I just bought a house in Melbourne and will be closing in a few weeks. It's zoned for University Park elementary but reading reviews on that school is making me not want to send my daughter there. (she starts kindergarten next year)

How does the school system work in FL? Can you send your kids to other public schools outside of their neighborhood? Here in MI we have school of choice which means you can apply to send your kid to any school you want and the charter schools here are free too.

Are there any good charter or private schools near New Haven and Babcock st?

There are a few possibilities, which the BPS website explains. The out-of-area option lets you apply for a different school than your zoned one, as long as space is projected to be available. There are also a few choice/magnet elementaries that are filled by an application/lottery process.

I'm not familiar with the private/charter options for the young ones.

Some schools are closed to out of area and you will need to apply as soon as you get here to get into one for next year. Not familiar with any charters in that area of Melbourne. There are some church affiliated schools in that area. Bethany Christian, Calvary Baptist, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic, and Holy Trinity Episcopal are not too far.

I want to get my daughter into the Indialantic Elementary school since we are literally right over the bridge (google maps says 5.5 miles away). I checked the Brevard School website and see they have a Choice Expo in November so I guess I'll be going to that to talk with them. I'm not sure we could afford $10,000+ for private tuition (yikes!).

Thanks!
