Hello all - my husband and I currently live in the Sarasota/Bradenton area and are very much thinking about moving to Cocoa Beach or Merritt Island.

I have visited the area twice now and really like the old Florida vibe, but the ultimate question is, how long will that last? My husband previously lived in Cocoa Beach for about 4 years and felt it was home, knows the area well, etc. My personal reason for wanting to leave where we are now, is the unbelievable amount of growth and congestion we are experiencing. A lot of the locals are upset about how many developers have come in and destroyed the charm here. It's sad and disheartening.

I understand it's impossible to avoid growth, or predict the future, so I'm wondering if you all can provide any bit of insight about what the future of Cocoa Beach looks like? I follow a few Cocoa Beach pages on Facebook to keep up with the locals perspective, but would also like some feedback here.

We are 32/41, no children, 1 dog and work can be remote so no need to necessarily worry about finding a new job. Thanks anyone who can share their opinion...

Yes, of course! I just hope the CCB community is closely knit, unlike here, the city is owned by investor's and the decision making is clearly based on profits, little interest with the preserving why everyone fell in love with Sarasota in the first place.

In order to build something you have to find vacant land of which there is practically none left in Cocoa Beach. We did not experience the building boom of the mid-2000s like many neighboring communities because most of the vacant land in Cocoa Beach was developed in the 60s. In addition we have very stringent height and density limits so there will never be new structures over four stories or with more than 12 units per acre. The population now (11,400 souls in 2014) is barely above what it was 50 years ago and is still below what it was in 1990.

Since moving here 30 years ago, I have never regretted that move and I love the small town sense of community. Cocoa Beach is not represented by the Pier and Ron Jon's tourist area. The real Cocoa Beach is the small town south of the Kelly Slater statue.

Ah, thank you very much for this data, which coincidentally I could have found on this site lol. Do you foresee more development in Merritt Island? For example here, Sarasota is so incredibly overdeveloped, it's overflowing into Bradenton. I wonder if that could happen there?

Consider the lack of tourists coming to spend money at restaurants/hotels, the unemployment at all levels from NASA folks to restaurant employees to teachers (if people move, school enrollment drops).

Upside might be some cheap real estate you could score as someone is moving out of town for a new job.

What closure? There were more launches in 2017 than in any previous year and SpaceX alone plans to launch about 50% more rockets in 2018 and Blue Origin has yet to begin launches. The space program has never been more robust.

Plenty of room for more development in Merritt Island but it can't spill into Cocoa Beach. No land.
