@klenderman Congratulations on your big decision! Callahan is lucky to get a teacher with so much experience.
@tb2727 Brevard County is an amazing place to live. From the beautiful secluded beaches to the hustle and bustle of Cocoa Beach there is a bit of something for everyone. We also have a lot of riverfront property where you can view dolphin and manatee in your backyard and jump in your boat for a quick ride to the river. As far as teaching goes, I can say Brevard County teachers are amazing. I worked in the schools for several years, and continue to volunteer. The teachers, staff and administration I've had the pleasure to work with have the students' best interests at heart for everything they do. The schools will be happy to have your husband too, because there are not enough male role models in the schools.

Change of plans! We are coming to Melbourne after all! I got a cryptic call yesterday from the principal stating my offer was being rescinded because of a school restructuring, meaning my position would no longer be available. Not sure what to make of that.......

Anyway, my some miracle, the position I'd been offered in Melbourne was still available because they hadn't found any other candidates to their liking, so he offered it back to me! Go me! So now we are back on the search for the Melbourne area. We will likely try to rent an apartment for 7 months so we can save up to buy a house and scope out the area.

Any apartment thoughts? Would like to keep it fairly low for maximum savings potential. Our current rent in Portland is 1500, so any difference between that and what we find will be what we can save each month. Recommendations?

Wow that is pretty terrible of that other school. At least it all worked out in the end!

I have been apartment hunting online and have found that if you are looking for something shorter term, there are some pretty good deals beachside out there that are only through the end of the year. Some are even fully furnished and cover most or all utilities. You would probably be in a condo though if that is an issue.

I am looking for a 12 month rental so they wont work for me.

Also remember, no state income tax! You will probably be saving 9% of your income if what I am reading is right.

I am not sure what the teacher pension system in OR makes you contribute.. but in FL it will only be 3%, plus Social Security. So you might see savings there too.

For my family coming from CT we are saving an obscene amount of money on taxes.

Congratulations on getting the job in Melbourne! Sometimes fate has other plans for us than we expected. You'll likely end up in the $1500 dollar range if you want a decent single family home. If you're willing to live in an apartment you can probably find a decent one for a bit less. It's great that you are taking your daughter to school with you so you're not tied to school boundaries. That will make your search much easier! Good luck.

Looking to sign a 7 month lease at Lake Pointe Apartments. They have a pretty low rent rate for a 7 month period. Any feedback on those? As long as they aren't some sort of drug and thug cesspool, I don't have much thought since it will just be temporary.
