Good Morning,

With retirement looming, we are considering retiring from California to the Florida/Brevard County/Satellite Beach_Indialantic area.

Are there any former California retirees that are now Brevard County FL retirees?

If so, what are the pros and cons that you have experienced?

Warm regards,

Reddog53

Maybe you would be happier in Oregon or maybe Texas. Brevard county is full as is much of the Florida coastline. Moving to Florida has become the newest hobby but sadly has no more room.

Not from California, but this area has a lot to offer. It will be rainier and much hotter than you are probably used to in California.
The ocean temp in winter is about the temp of the Pacific out there in summer.
I think we are a lot more laid back here with people moving in that try to make it more like up North which is not always good.
Buying a house here will definitely be cheaper than most areas of California unless you want a beach front mansion. I would avoid living in a 55 + mobile home/doublewide/manufactured housing park. We do not get hurricanes often, but concrete block homes are somewhat safer when we do. Homeowners insurance can be expensive. Taxes have a cap, but the county and cities are adding on fees to get around the limit. but still probably will be less than California.
You will both need to know how to drive. Things are spread out not up here on the coast. Public transportation is limited. Basically, here in Florida you may live in 1 town, but will be doing things in many of the surrounding counties, going to the cities , or the other coasts for fun, doctors, airports, cruise ships, etc.

More populated maybe, as well as more expensive waterfront wise, but I wouldn't call it full. Lots of new buildings going up in Satallite Beach and Indialantic. Still vacant lots to be found as well if you can afford them.

I think the OP will find Florida to be more humid and in the summer, more rainy than out west. You may also miss the authentic southwestern and Mexican food flavor as well as fewer natural type markets. But you will find plenty of seafood places. That means great Sushi, Thai, fish and shrimp. Hopefully Trader Joes eventually makes it to Brevard.

We're moving from California to Brevard as well. It's a much better lifestyle. There will be an abundance of fresh fruit and veggies at farmer's markets as well as grown in your own yard. The water is much warmer and cleaner than the Pacific. The tropical breezes are something you can't get in California. Much more bang for your buck here too! We from California are not bringing the NYC pace with us.

We are from California but living in Maryland via the military. Hubby retires next year and we are planning on moving to FL, Brevard or St. Johns County (job dependant). COL is better, it's warmer and there is tons to do. I'm so excited about it!

What part of CA are you from?
