I know the economy is BAD everywhere and we are considering Ct. & Fl. since my husband has family in both places. We are a General Contractor and Cabinet Maker. We can do new building, remodeling, etc. We would like to find someplace that has some land that we could have a couple of horses. What is affordable, good schools and make some money! Any help and suggestions would greatly be appreciated. We would need to rent for awhile as well. THANK YOU!

Default Palm City Farms

Look at Palm City Farms in Martin County Florida... a bit pricey, but horses are allowed. Not all property is zoned for "commercial" equestrian facilities, so if your thinking of boarding (for others) make sure your aware of the zoning limitations. The area still has some agricultural zoning which keeps the taxes down. Probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the roads are paved. Great schools (all A rated), easy access to the interstate (I-95) and the Florida Turnpike. If you have Goggle Earth look for Palm City... west of the turnpike and east of I-95. Most property is at least 5 acres... some more... but 5 acres is the norm.

I live in Palm City Farms, raised 4 kiddies here and had horses. My neighbors have a commercial barn.

West of Ft. Pierce in the un-incorporated county is also very nice. Crime rate is low. As a matter of fact, a lot of the county deputies live in the area. No restrictions on horses or parking of commercial vehicles. Prices have really come down. You can easily get a newer 3/2 on 5 acres for $250,000 range.

St. Lucie County has an excellent magnet school program, but there is a waiting list. We also have several brand new schools for all grades that have just been built. The new Allapattah Flats K-8 is out in the un-incorporated county and supposed to be great. The new Ft. Pierce Central Highschool is brand new (old one had to be torn down due to 2004 hurricanes) and state of the art. Google St. Lucie County School Board and get the stats off their website.

Also, for horseback riding, we have many, many horse riding parks to choose from!!!

We also have a wonderful 4 year college right here in town. They have many, many programs for dual enrollment for highschool students.
