The moon as dawn breaks
glides freely through thick clouds,
layer on layer:
then one by one layers of the past
open before my mind as well.

And one time a bird came to a topside window and pecked at it.
He was pecking at his own image in the shadowy glass. But they
all sat round and painted his likeness in his colours, or drew it in
grey pencil. And after a time, looking through his own image,
he began to see them sitting there, and learnt that all that looks
like looking-glass is not so, and that images may be under images.

When we start to identify with our bodies and minds and think of this life as ours,
then we are similar to the traveler who doesn’t want to leave a hotel. We have a
wrong idea about this temporary stopping place, and we find ourselves always in struggle and conflict.
Ajahn Chah

I was once told that certain spiritual masters in Tibet used to set their teacups upside down
before they went to bed each night as a reminder that all life was impermanent. And then,
when they awoke each morning, they turned their teacups right side up again with the thought,
'I'm still here!' This simple gesture was a reminder to be aware every moment of the day.
