So meditation is basically the same thing as prayer. Only Buddhist don't call it a prayer because they're not praying to anything and they're not praying for anything.
On July 9, 1958, a large earthquake caused a massive chunk of mountain to dislodge and fall 3,000 feet into a narrow inlet of Lituya Bay, Alaska creating a mega tsunami with a wave height of approximately 100 feet.
Amazingly there were survivors of the event, notably Howard Ulrich and his 8 year old son, Sonny, on their fishing boat, the Edrie.

“He threw me a life preserver and he said, ‘son, it’s time to start praying!’”
I use the words 'being still, in silence'...when talking to Christians because for some
reason they get riled up about the word meditation...they will even bring up 'satan'!
Part of my start up when sitting in meditation is to 'talk' internally to 'whatever' it turns out to be...God, my Higher Self, the Powers that Be, the All That Is, the Divine Presence....
to center myself...set my intention.
Notice I hesitate saying "pray' as to not
upset a Buddhist or an atheist even...they might relate to the Higher Self!
My input...sorry if it seems off topic.
I love any topic that brings up meditation...or sitting in stillness for a long time.

Yes, while I think anyone can meditate, meditating in Buddhism would be different than meditating in christianity.

My thoughts...Prayer is an aspect of meditation. I think of meditation as connection with the Divine, within and around each of us. Prayer is asking that Divine Infinite Intelligence for energetic help for health or wellbeing. Meditation without prayer is enjoying and growing in the connection, and gaining insight, information and growth.
