My advise would be to drive over here and check out all the suburbs, and decide for yourself.

Where will you be working? Will you be commuting? What is your budget? Its easy to say avoid Lackawanna, try Williamsville, but that might not be possible without a high budget for housing.

My further advice would be to rent something for a few months, and really get to know areas very well before you buy anything. Real estate isn't going anywhere. It has been steady in this market for decades, six months isn't going to change anything.

I 2nd Justin's comments. Give the board some idea of budget, work location and community "must haves" and we will be able to provide much better advice. There are some great posters here who will really try to help if you provide detailed criteria.
Thanks,
BigD JT

We're on a bit of a tight budget. So as much as everyone raves about it, a community like Amherst is out of our range.
We did drive up to Lockport to check out a few of the houses we like. One was in a good looking neighborhood but the others were kind of shifty looking. So much so, that we're kind of moving our thinking away from Lockport.

I know I keep switching it up, but what are your thoughts on Medina, NY or Ridgeway, NY?

I guess what we're looking for is small town next to big city. We're in Hammondsport now and there aren't really any big cities close enough to us. We want the feel of living in small but close enough to big to enjoy the convenience. lol does that even exist?

Lockport really isn't bad. What is your range by the way... I think that makes things easier

Where are you going to be working? Ridgeway & Medina are going to be 1 hour+ commutes to most of metro Buffalo in the best weather (in the winter its going to be a nightmare), Lockport is a good 45 minutes from downtown, not too bad if you are going to be working in Amherst though. For affordable but closer in you might consider Tonawanda or Hamburg, maybe even Eden or Deby if you are looking for something a little more rural but plan on working downtown.

If you want small town feel with big city convenience, then you should look into Elma, NY. I personally don't know what housing costs are there, but it's rural enough to feel like the boonies, but theres access to Rt. 400, which is a freeway that connects with I-90

I currently live in Amherst, it's a really good place to raise a family. The school district is good, the neighborhoods are safe... the taxes are a little more but it's worth it.
