My wife and I are moving to Buffalo area. My work place would be near Rosewell Cancer Institute (RCI). We are thinking of living in Amherst as we have heard lots of good things about it. We are looking to rent a 2 BR apt, preferably under $900 (heat, water included) with other amenities. It would be great if we could get advice on where in Amherst should we look for (safe (priority)/commute). Is there an option of public transportation from Amherst to RCI? What apt buildings would you and would you not suggest? Any other general info would also be useful for our move. Thank you!

You can take the metro rail from UB South to Allen St (within easy walking distance to Roswell).

As far as Amherst what exactly are you looking for other than safe (basically all of Amherst is safe)? Are you dead set on living in Amherst or are you open to nicer areas within the city of Buffalo that are closer to Roswell?

Thanks for your reply. We would like to live in Amherst. Basically we are looking for a friendly neighborhood, short distance to whole foods area, private parking (not sure if the option of garage parking would be within our price range), gym facility, apt with a balcony would be great.

Erie County Government: Maps - Municipalities

This is an Erie County map of towns. The rail runs from SUNYAB South Campus to downtown ( 6 miles). Good places to look for apts. near South Campus are the towns of: Amherst, Tonawanda, Village of Kenmore, and even Village of Williamsville. north Buffalo is also fine, as long as it is only you and your wife.

The link to Tudor gardens: A friend's daughter had one of these townhouses and liked it: has a garage underneath and a place for W/D hookups. There is a bus right over to South Campus station and also one down Colvin to downtown. You can catch the rail either at S. Campus or at many places downtown. They includes heat, water, cable and the garage you want. It is city of Buffalo, 2 blocks from Kenmore line. No gym.

If you have kids and choose to live within the City, you will need to factor in the cost of private schooling. The Buffalo Public Schools are not fit for man nor beast let alone children. They have far fewer than half of their students receiving even a non regents High School diploma. If you want your child to grow up to be more than a welfare recipient or burger flipper the City schools are not the place to put them.

The City School District is in utter chaos: http://www.buffalonews.com/city/schools/article517168.ece (broken link)
