Hi everyone,
I'm temporarily moving to Buffalo from NYC. I have heard that some neighborhoods have racism issues. I'm a professional African-American person who wants to live peacefully and in a safe area. Money won't be an issue since I will be working...any suggestion? Thank you....

I don't think racism in Buffalo is anything exceptional. It's historically a very segregated city, but you should be fine almost anywhere you decide to live here.

Need more details. Are you looking to live in the city or suburbs? House or apartment? How far away do you want to be from work, and where is that located?

@ static_g,
I don't want to be too far from work. I'll be driving to work which will be most likely the children's Psychiatric center @ west Seneca or less likely the Buffalo Psych Center @ Buffalo I believe. A 25 minutes driving wouldn't bother me. I'm looking a 1 BR apt in the suburbs. It has to be in a safe, quiet, and clean area. Thank you static...

It's easy to get to the psych center from West Seneca via 400 and 190, so I'd concentrate on finding an apt in West Seneca. Generally, the parts further from the city tend to be nicer, but also more expensive. What's your budget? I wouldn't worry about the racism thing. Buffalo has a bad reputation for lots of things, but racism is one I've never heard of. I'll be surprised if you experience it.

If you're open to living in the city, Elmwood Village is awesome and would be perfect for you and it's possibly walkable to the psych center (Elmwood and Forest). Elmwood has a great mix of folks and it's very diverse and open-minded.

@ static_g,
Thank you so much for the info. It really helps! I can consider living in the city.Budget-wise, I can spend to $1000/mth..... Of course, cheaper would be better. All I need is safety, cleanliness, and tranquility! Thank you static....

Welcome. You can Google for Elmwood Village to learn more about it. It's won national awards and such. Best wishes in Buffalo

Feel free to post back with more specific questions if you find a place.

Also, if you want suburbs with a decent amount of diversity and fine, look into the Cleveland Hill area of Cheektowaga, Eggertsville and Snyder in Amherst and Kenmore.

Hey storm, do you have a family with you that you will be moving here as well? This is the 6th most segregated city (Buffalo) in the country. I have found that to be very frustrating coming from a very UNsegregated area of Florida. I can't find hair braiding places catering to aa people in a safe neighborhood or beauty stores or churches. I wanted a simple hair beader and I had to wait till I was traveling to pick one up. It has a very segregated feel around the area especially in suburbs. I'm not trying to discourage you at all!!! I do think you will like it here.
