Default Better to live in Buffalo/Amherst area, or Rochester

My wife and I will need to move to New York soon so we can be closer to her mother in Toronto, Canada. Will the Buffalo/Amherst area be better, or the Rochester area be better for job opportunities? I have some savings so I can hold out for about a year, but I would like to find some sort of job as soon as I get settled so I have money coming in while I look for better opportunities.

Thanks in advance!

Depends on what kind of work you can do.

The Rochester area gained 10,400 new jobs and Buffallo got 4900 new jobs compared to September last year.

Technically Rochester has the better job market but I'd look in Buffalo to find a job since it's much closer to Toronto.

Is moving to Canada an option? I'd try that first.

What kind of work do you guys do? Neither city is awesome for jobs. Not knowing your preferred career, in your case I'd stick with Buffalo since it'll shave 2 hours off your commute to Toronto.

I'd say move to Canada. The commute from Buffalo or even inside Canada is brutal. I remember being stuck in traffic for hours as I used to commute on the weekends...

If the OP was commuting to Canada daily I woudl say you guys have a point but its no big deal to go to Canada once a week.

If you are going on a regular basis get a enhanced DL or even a Nexus card & its much easier than some of the posters on this thread make it out to be. Its also obvious that the posters on this thread that are telling you to move to Canada are clueless as to the tax implications of that move. NY taxes may be high but they don't touch Ontario.

What makes you think I don't understand the tax consequences? That's quite the assumption on your part.

I happen to think the quality of life would be much better in Canada than Buffalo -- even though taxes and COL are higher in Canada.

I love you posters that moved away & only come to this board to bash the area & direct people away, even when its clearly not in their best interests.

Sorry but the quality of life in Hamilton, St Caths or anywhere else in So Ontario isn't any better than WNY & definitely not so much better to make up for the extra taxes & higher cost of living (at a similar or maybe even lower rate of pay). Toronto is a great city but unless you know you can get a great job (the OP never told anyone what they do) living there comfortably can be as unrealistic as doing the same in NYC, Miami or LA.
