I was in Buffalo recently and had a conversation with some locals about why the city seemed so depressed. What I heard over and over again was that the local government was horrendously corrupt. I know the simple answer is to just elect someone honest to the job, but we all know the answer isn't that simple, don't we?
It's a shame really. I would say the Victorian architecture in Buffalo is the most beautiful I've ever seen. There is so much potential there, but people need jobs, and not for $7 or $8 an hour. Nothing has come along to fill the void of all of the manufacturing jobs that have all been sent overseas. Not everyone is cut out for a white collar job. Cities near the Great Lakes were built on manufacturing and shipping.
Buffalo's poverty rate is nearly 30 percent. Experts believe several welfare reform initiatives and a lack of universal health care are some of the reasons buffalo is so poor. - This was the Clinton's Biggest Political Platform in the White House and It;s Hilary's Biggest Platform for NY and to get back into the Whitehouse. Please keep her in NY.
You can block the exits, it won't stop the exudous. There are wonderful colleges in NY, I graduated from One. Sadly, there are 2 or 3 jobs and thousands of graduates. So, the rest of us have to go somewhere and work or collect welfare.

then we need to do something to get the jobs back.
You'll also have to figure out what to do about the St. Lawrence Seaway. When it opened in the 1950's (I think), it diverted a major shipping route that used to go right by Buffalo.
I grew up near Buffalo (Cheektowaga) and the demise of the area was talked about from when I was kid, in the 1950s. There was all that "Boost Buffalo" campaign. Remember the song:
Boost Buffalo, It is Good for You
Boost Buffalo, It is Good for You
Buffalo deserves your Appreciation
It is the Greatest Lake Port in the Nation
Boost Buffalo, Boost Buffalo, It is Good for You.
Is that song still being sung?? I left Buffalo in the 1970s. or it in rap now. and
Unfortunately the song changed:
Leave Buffalo, it is Good for You
Leave Buffalo, it is Good for You

Uhm Leaving for what though?
If you were a kid in the 50's you are nearing the end of your working life.. so you are not leaving for a job
Im in my 20s .. I could leave anywhere I wanted to .. I used to want to head out west, SFBA , then I realized I dont feel like working my life away to sit in traffic.. maybe if San Fran gets ghettofied and more Buffalo-like I'll reconsider. I also wanted to move to Portland... that used to be a giant junkie ****hole and totally over-looked... now its getting yuppified and expensive with an influx of californians cashing out of thier bubble-realty... **** that.
Im in no mood for that anymore. The more I thought about it.. this is probably the only part of the world a middle class person could purchase waterfront property if they want it. not to mention just any property they wanted. Im not going anywhere unless I have to. And even a job is necessarily worth leaving for, if the destination is BS (see: the South) or the pay while higher is the exact same quality of lilfe id be leaving behind -- i.e. I could make $60k/year in NYC and that would be me living in a roach infested closet in a ghetto somewhere.. no thanks.
That why I don't buy into what people are leaving for -- they have a fantasy in their head of what they should be getting out of life. (and its complete garbage)

Your missed the point little mouse, I said I left Buffalo in the 1970s--so I am gone.
I was just asking if the song was still sung???? and I added a little similarity change to the lyrics, which I am not happy about--that people are leaving for what they perceive as better, which I know better than you that it is not always true. A previous post had said that Buffalo was in Decline for 3 decades, I was just pointing out that it was an issue over 50 years ago.
So my little young mouse, please tell me, have you heard this little song????

No, theres no songs like that, not that I know of. I remember hearing about the whole 'Talking proud' thing in the late 70s but i havent actually heard it.
Here's some new Buffalo tunes.. Buffalo's own General Spade and his rap 'Welcome to Buffalo'.. they play this on 103.3 the Edge sometimes

I am at the age where I cannot listen to rap but I did listen to all of this rap, and it actually made a good impression on me---but it also put a tear in my eye--because in somewhere deep down, I will always love Buffalo and it hurts me to hear of the decline.
I read many of your posts. As you know, I do not agree with your language, your sometimes wrong impressions of other places in this country and your tendency to shoot from the hip without reading with understanding.
Your youth and "need to experience more", shows through in your posts,
however, I agree with the message that Western New York State is a mighty fine place.
