I'd rather live in Buffalo with no job than Charlotte with a 6 figure job, seriously!
I second that.. charlotte is a boring corporate banking city. Incredibly sterile environment and place to live.. and thats not at all what Im looking for.
If you all you want out of life is a new cheaply constructed McMansion in the middle of anonymous suburban sprawl - then Charlottes the place. Thats all I ever see down there. Plus traffic is brutal because of all that. (other than at night when the city proper is a total ghost town)
I used to really hate Buffalo, and I was born here and raised, left and came back, but not for the reason of missing this city. As a real estate agent now, I find that Buffalo actually has quite a bit to offer folks, compared to other areas. Are their huge 6 figure jobs? not a ton, but many of my friends have them. I have also found you dont need a six figure job to be happy here. The housing is quite affordable compared to other areas. $7 an hour jobs? sure, if you dont go out and bust your butt, then what do you want? or for that matter deserve? I have found that those complaining about not finding good jobs that pay decent money (which to start for me would be 35 - 40k with no major experience) then those folks are really looking or expanding their thoughts on what they can do - tunnel vision.
The weather? I like it alot more than i liked Boston, Mass - beautiful fresh water front, of course politics is everywhere you go, i do not know anywhere that doesnt have a problem with politics. Generally the people are friendly and welcoming. Bad areas? which city doesnt have them? Close proximity to Canada and Toronto if you like the BIG city idea.
anyway, just thought to add my two cents in to this conversation!!
I would recommend doing some research on past household income and current adjusted for inflation. You will find that people may have more thing but they actually earn less and owe more money than in the past generations. The disparity is growing very fast. Earned income has been flat or at a loss since the mid 1990's.
Are current condition with the U.S. economy is that we are using so much credit to make it look good. If you compare the U.S. with other developed nations you will see we are behind in a lot of area's such as employment, income, education, gdp growth, murder rate/crime rate, infant mortality rate, birth rate, and technology infrastructures. So I believe that America needs a little alone time and work on it social problems instead of governing the world.

Your choice. You've listed a laundry list of topics:
employment, income, GDP growth, murder rate, crime rate, infant mortality, birth rate, tech infrastructures....

I agree also and I live in Charlotte. It might sound wierd but Charlotte is too new for me. I love the kind of grittiness that B-Lo has. I have family members that live there and they wonder why I want to my to Buffalo from Charlotte but they are older than me so they love the south . I love the seasons of Buffalo because you get to experience all four seasons as opposed to Charlotte, it's basically hot as hell for six months then warm for three, and cool for another three months. It doesn't actually get cold here, at least not to me anyway and snow is a joke here. I get pissed off when everything closes down from a 1/4 inch of snow sticking on the ground. I'll stop complaining about Charlotte now because I can go on all day. Hopefully, if I can find a decent job in my field there, then I will get the hell out of here and make my move up there.
yeah, I am NOT a happy camper living here in NC, but I must stick up for it (charlotte) in the sense that it may be brand new, stale, clinical, little to no charm at all is that it simply did for us (the relocaters) what NY couldn't. It gave us jobs & a decent income. People are hired down here more based on merit, and not who you know. Believe me, the job is the only thing holding me here....and if that opened up in WNY, I'd be back in a second. But I can't knock the area that has given me a chance when upstate NY simply wouldn't.

So.... these "experts" propose more government with the resulting tax increases & bureaucracy that have been direct factors in Buffalo reaching this 'lofty' goal???? And the more the government provides... the more the people do not need to provide for themselves... and the death spiral continues.
nice to see someone with some wisdom post. Having left Buffalo 9 years ago, one of the biggest memories I look back on is how much the local and NY state govt messes things up by being, well the govt. If Buffalo is to have any hope at all for the future, it is to get rid of 80% of the govt. If you rely on any govt, whether it is local or federal to solve your problems, you deserve the inevitable toilet your life is flushing down. Stop looking to city leaders to develop a waterfront that will never happen. Vote in people who get rid of red tape and the entitlement systems that are drowning the entire Northeast.
The only time I was there in the last 2 years I was shocked to see that sales tax had gone up higher than any other place I ever remember visiting in the US. I've spent time in almost 40 states by the way. Property taxes are extremely high. Luckily house values are a joke. I can't believe how many houses cost less than 1 year of tuition at a private university.
This is what happens when you engender government. Trying to copy the policies of Western Europe is not exactly a way to improve an economy. Buffalo is flushing down the toilet for more than just bad weather.
Citing lack of 'universal healthcare' as a cause to Buffalo's problems. I'd like to hear an explanation to that. What a joke. Socialist healthcare is already here people. The govt already runs healthcare when one looks at the statistics and the laws- hence the problem.
Ughhh. Stop voting for people who promise you things other than your freedom. Remember that what government gives it must first take away.
People are leaving the rustbelt cities and moving to freer places like the Southeast and West BECAUSE there is less govt regulation (coercion). Wake up Buffalo!!!!
Im not from Buffalo, but from Chautauqua County, an hour or so south. I used to think the area was terrible, until I moved away. I can't wait to get back, even if it requires going back to the 60-90 minute commute each way. It may be poor in buffalo, but its also very cheap! And the surrounding areas are great in my opinion.
Your so funny, lmao. Charlotte, let see, has jobs. Oh yeah. That's why people are moving here. YOu can afford to live, drive, and do not have to pay a nickel deposit on a can of pepsi. And, we do not have to deal with Hilary Clinton. There are many plus'. By the way. Are you ready for winter yet? Snow tires, chains? It's hot and sunny here.
Snow is great!
