That's a great area. Walk a block west up Rhode Island to the Essex Street Pub and Left Bank restaurant, a few more blocks to Urban Roots Garden Center and Five Points Bakery. East a couple blocks to the shops along Lexington and then Elmwood itself.
You could call it Elmwood Village, although Richmond is kind of the western border and then most people would just say "West Side" west of there.
Thank you for the great info JSmith. Prior to you responding I was taking a virtual tour of the area using Google and Street View and noticed some of the really cool places nearby. Five Points Bakery sounds awesome!
I would say don't give upon Craigslist. I have seen some really scummy things on that site, but they also have nice rentals in places where there aren't enough units for the landlord to advertise. I would say be careful though, I ended up in a situation with a very strange gay guy when I visited his apartment.
