I agree, you aren't going to find anything that you want to live in for less than $500. There is a ton to be had for $500-600 per month.

Also keep in mind that some places include heat . Other make you pay for it. So not all $500 apartments are equal..

Iffy is a matter of perspective I suppose. Lots of poor neighborhoods are also safe. There are also poor and dangerous areas too. Just have to know how to distinguish.

DAYUM!!!
I wanted to look off-campus since the room&board for the year at the school I was considering was around ~$11k a year which is ridiciulous, especially since you just get a tiny dorm room that you have to share with a potentially creepy stranger
**Sorry, nevermind. I think those are the available bedrooms not the number of bedrooms it has in the apartment. Got a little carried away for a second. But those bedrooms seem like a very good value, hopefully they are available on a month-to-month basis.

Why in the heck would someone from LI move to WNY looking for the cheapest possible place to live ? If you are a potential UB student as I was years back, get in and get out of WNY upon getting your degree. I lived on Englewood near south campus during my college years but that area went to hell 10 plus years ago. Started with that sub shop owner getting murdered in broad daylight by eastside gangbangers. Even North Campus surroundings are boring. 2nd rate mall in The Boulevard Mall on Maple. Atleast Hooters was there 20 years ago for Monday Night Football specials. That building has been boarded up for some 15 years now. Think there is a Friendly's nearby now. South Campus area is unsafe and north campus is sterile suburbia. Enroll at Stony Brook.
I will add the following as an alum. Do you have an Associates ? In many majors, you have to prove yourself the first two years before being accepted into the actual program your major is affiliated with. For me, it was the UB School of Management in Jacobs Hall. It's also more expensive to attend a state school than a community college so a CC should be a consideration.I actually enjoyed the Main St strip. Especially when the Giants beat the Bills in SB XXV. However, that scene dried up many years ago when Chippewa became the spot for 20 year olds. I remember PJ Bottoms, Third Base, Mickey Rats, Mollys Pub, Broadway Joe's and The Steer. Wasn't bad back then to be a student outside of your classwork. It also wasn't unsafe to live on LaSalle or Minnesota either. Times have changed. None of the colleges in Buffalo area have good amenities these days. Canisius is in a crap neighborhood near Jefferson and way overpriced. Same with D'youville. Buff State doesn't have a great academic rep for many majors and that area is deteriorating too. That leaves you with UB. Like I said. Save your money and attend Stony Brook.

Thank you for the suggestions.
It's actually for Grad School that i'm considering tranferring. I'm expecting to graduate with my BS in about a year and since I have stayed local for my entire education, i'm trying to experience living in another region. I'm really interested in schools in Albany or Buffalo as of right now.

Albany is a far better bet for you IMO. School has a very good academic rep and you have a real nice mountain backdrop. Always found the nature surrounding Albany to be pretty with the Catskills, Adirondacks and Berkshires visible. Plus, less than 3 hours from LI,Montreal and Boston if you want a big city weekend. Lake George is a cool town about an hour north as you probably know is well. The people in Albany while they have some New England influences, generally speak and act like REAL NYers. Meaning we do not say "pop" and we don't have accents like those in Ohio which is exactly what Buffalo is. With a strong LI accent which my father had, you immediately stick out like a soar thumb outside the UB population in WNY. In Albany, because they have a bit of Boston and NYC accents and attitudes mixed, you'd mesh better with your surroundings IMO.If you are skiier, you have 4000 foot mountains that are world famous near Rutland ,VT and the Northern Catskills (within 90 mile drive). Buffalo has dinky hills maybe 1500-2000 feet tops an hour away for "skiing." Best of luck !

If you don't mind me asking, what type of program are you looking to get into?

Re: that Hooters location...I'm going to test my memory here. I think that when Hooters was there, it was Hooters occupying half the building, Ponderosa (?) the other half. There's no way that one or both of those tenants didn't exist within the past 15 years. Now that building has been revived as the home to some sort of bar/restaurant, one that's presumably similar in vibe to the nearby Brick House (this is my guess from a.) having been to the Brick House once for a soccer teammate's birthday party and b.) the fact that both places call themselves "taphouses", if I'm recalling correctly)). You may have moved away before one or both of those places opened, however. And I'm not going to dispute your overall assessment of the surrounding area as "sterile suburbia".
The overall bitterness evident in your posts makes for pretty entertaining reading, btw. Hey, if you need this to be your outlet to keep ripping on Buffalo even after you've finally made your escape from the area, I say go for it. Regarding the place you now call home...I remember that as of not all that long ago, Phoenix was named in some (maybe questionable) list as the car theft capital of the USA; any takes on that stat?

Head towards South Campus. Cheap stuff there. 450-500 I think would be possible. Buffalo isn't too bad, just be street smart.
And Magnum just loooooves to spend his time ranting about how bad Buffalo is, but he spends so much time on a Buffalo board. Hrm?

Considering how high rent is on LI (my hometown as well) or NYC, if you're going by those standards, I don't think you'd need to necessarily lower yourself to an inexpensive area of buffalo if you don't need to. Even nice, trendy areas like elmwood village, hertel or allentown you may be surprised to find fit your budget.
I agree though, a roommate perhaps may help.
