I'm buying a house in LaSalle with crumbling asbestos pipe insulation and since I plan on turning the basement into rooms I'm going to get an abatement rather than just try to cover it. Has anybody here ever hired an asbestos abatement company? The ones I've seen in WNY haven't had reviews.

I've heard they're expensive as all get out. The reason being that they have to follow all kinds of crazy protocols. However, you, as a homeowner, have the right to remove the stuff yourself. Disposal, on the other hand, is tricky. I think at a minimum you need to double bag in 6 mil poly bags.

You can do it youself but I'd call a professional for this as it's way too dangerous to screw around with especially the dry airborn asbestos. I'd never even consider removing it myself. Too dangerous even when you factor in the breating equipment, protective clothing and specialized disposal and your family's safety is in the balance. Asbestos is the real deal!! I'd continue asking around for reviews of local Asbestos removal companies and hopefully you'll get some decent ones. Good luck.

Right, so you wet it down good before removal. Furthermore, you'd be better off wrapping it in some saran or foil and leaving it. It's a great insulator and, if encapsulated, is basically safe.

Encapsulation isn't really an option, the wrapping is shot and it turns to dust almost with a light breeze. I'd do it myself, but I don't want to get in over my head. Once you cut into it, you have to do it all at once (the pipes span the entire basement). I'll keep waiting for reviews, and hopefully I'll be getting my keys Friday and start getting quotes.
