Downtown Buffalo’s only movie theater may soon go dark - City & Region - The Buffalo News

It would be sad to see downtown's only movie theater close.

If you read the article, what you find is that public monies have been pumped into this venture for more than a quarter of a century with nothing to show for it: not a significant number of jobs and not supposed "spin off" businesses.

I'm not one of those short-sighted individuals who can't see the benefit of the arts, but this is not really an "arts venue". It's a subsidized movie theater that exists so that Buffalo can have bragging rights to having a downtown movie theater and that downtown Buffalo residents can walk to a movie after dining at one of their favorite restaurants. Apparently, there aren't enough downtown residents or they aren't dining and movie going enough for this place to make ends meet.

The Regal Cinemas on Elmwood north of Hertel are accessible to downtown residents who want to see a movie but don't want to drive via the #20 bus. The subsidies going to this place can be better spent elsewhere.

It never was a "big deal". It is not big draw. It will get used by live theater.
