Possible move to Western NY...HELP!
We were just in Niagara Falls this week, my husband had a 2 day interview with the National Grid. It looks good. He will be working in ALL of western NY on the power lines. So, I was thinking it would be best to live near the CENTER of Western NY. BUT I do not know SQUAT about about anywhere over there.
Looking at a map, somewhere near the finger lakes may work.
My MAIN problem is this: We have a special needs child (6 years old) she will need to go to a Childrens Hospital several times a year. So I would like to be somewhat close to one. But I have a feeling the childrens hospitals aren't near the Funger Lakes right?! LOL! Rochester, Buffalo...they are too North. Is there any Childrens Hospital in central WNY?
I am SO lost here. We maybe moving in 2 months and I don't even know where to LOOK!! ANY HELP would be appraciated. I also have an 8 year old son, so the schools have to be good and we would also like to rent a house. But, I know renting a house here in CT is OUTRAGEOUS, is it very high out there too? We can only afford about $950-$1000 a month to rent a place and it has to be a one story because my daughter is in a wheelchair.
See why I need help?! LOL! This is so stressful.
PS... I like to be nearby shopping centers LOL! So if all of WNY is boonies, I am in trouble huh?!!??
THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP!!!
Jeni

Jeni, I'm agreeing with MovesAlot. However, if you're considering WNY (the Finger Lakes region is more the western part of Central NY.) Buffalo has a good Women's and Children's hospital.
You can also see my "Why Buffalo?" thread for more information on the Erie County area.
Congrats on the relocation as well.

Jeni, all of Western NY or all of Upstate NY? There is a difference.
Is Rochester even under National Grid? What ever happened to Rochester Gas & Eclectic?
Not sure this is much help but....Syracuse is currently building a huge new Children's Hospital that should be open in 2009 called Galisano Children's Hospital at University Hospital.

He would be working in ALL of WESTERN NY. From the tippy top to the very bottom by PA.
So I guess the only Childrens hospitals are Rochester and Buffalo huh? POOP! I sure dont want to drive an hour to go to a Dr appt LOL! Oh well, better my hubby do all that driving than me So I guess we should go UPPER/WESTERN then huh?
Thank you SO much for the apartment/housing listings!! I will check them out for sure!!
Now, what towns should I avoid? Not to be rude or anything of course, but I have 2 small kids. I've been there done that already anyway. LOL! I'm looking for mid class or like working class type towns. Cant afford upper class, thats for sure!! But dont want to be in the ghetto either.
So, a list of towns would be great!!! And I need a Walmart!! LOL! Do they have any Super Walmarts over there? There is none here where I live and I've always wanted to be able to shop at one

As far as crimerates go...you really don't have anything to worry about unless you are in some of the bad inner city neighborhoods in the cities of Buffalo or Rochester; any of the suburbs of those cities, and any of the small towns in the whole region; are great places to raise a family. The only really affluent towns are the southeastern suburbs of Rochester ("the P towns" of Pittsfor, Penfield, and Perinton) and Orchad Park and I believe Clarence in suburban Buffalo. The rest of the region is mostly middle class as you had said you are looking for. Do you want to be in a more suburban type setting; where you will be closer to shopping (as well as better schools for the most part) or in a genuine far from the city independant small town?

I'd try Cheektowaga, especially the Maryvale School district. It's a safe, clean place to live with decent schools, nearby shopping and quaint homes in a reasonably priced neighborhood. It's zip codes 14225 and 14226.

First, I would have your husband get a map of where he'd work. I live in Lancaster/Alden (both towns) and we are NYSEG, not National Grid. Depew is NYSEG. So, I imagine there are other 2nd and 3rd ring Buffalo suburbs which are.
Women & Children's Hospital in Buffalo is a very good hospital. Does your child need a specialized school or just a 1 floor one? You need to address that with districts.
You have lots of malls and WalMarts ( even supercenters) in the Cheektowaga/Amherst/Clarence area -- the Galleria is enormous. There is a supercenter on Transit Rd in Clarence and another in Niagara Falls. We have every chain store known to man. ( As far as I am concerned, I would rather we didn't have so many)
BTW, 14226 is Amherst, not Cheektowaga.
