I threw this question around a few times. Most people I know seem to consider it a small big city. By contrast, they seem to consider Rochester a big small city. What do you guys think?

I've lived in both cities. My perspective was that Buffalo felt bigger. Probably due to the fact that it was a much bigger city in the past. Buffalo topped out at nearly 600K at one point while Rochester hit around 330K. To me, that was apparent just in driving around the Buffalo area and being there.

Now with that said, each metro area is close to the same population now and both areas felt like they had the same amount of amenities and things to do, but Buffalo had that "feel" of being a little bigger. So I would agree with what those people say.

Its relative to what you know as a "city". I grew up near NYC; I see this as one way. If you grew up in Syracuse or Binghamton, you would see this differently
