I have a family member that is considering moving to Buffalo along with me at some point. They would have their own home/condo/townhouse most likely.

They will be turning 66 this year and would be interested in finding out what government assistance programs are available to them such as any property tax assistance, medical bill assistance, state/federal income tax credits, and any other assistance programs that would be available to someone living in the Buffalo / Erie county area.

What state/government agency would be best to call in New York to get the process started in finding out if they'd be eligible for anything?

Thank you!

There are a lot of senior apartments of all varieties in the immediate Buffalo area, from subsidized housing where seniors only pay 30% of their monthly income to housing to much more luxurious digs.

Buffalo and most of its close suburbs have senior centers and a variety of senior services, often including some transport services which may or may not depend upon income. When your relative finds a home, then contact the town for senior information.

In regards to STAR and Enhanced STAR, there's a limit, quite high, on income. However, that's a state program. Individual towns may also give tax breaks to seniors.

Okay this is a good start and thank you guys for the information.

Is there an agency of phone number for us to call and maybe for someone to listen to our specific situation and offer additional information on what would be available for the current situation? I tried looking around but best I could find was "temporary assistance and disability" benefits program hotline. Maybe we'll need to jump around from department to department. Maybe it's best to start with STAR program department and they can start re-directing us.

Here are some links to senior centers/programs in Buffalo and the suburban towns that you might be likely to settle in:
Here's the Erie County website for senior services: Erie County Senior Services

The STAR program is only for home owners, and you would apply for it through your city or town.
