Hi, Saheel.
Amherst has actually been much-discussed on this forum. I suggest clicking back on earlier pages--you'll find quite a few postings on Amherst. Some of them are devoted to/named by Amherst per se, whole other coverage of Amherst is in postings about/named for Buffalo or Western NY suburbs generally.
I lived and went to school there for quite a few years. Although I've lived elsewhere for quite a while now, I do visit often, and I think my views are pretty accurate.
It's a VERY good place to raise a family in many ways. Among the lowest crime rates in the country. Excellent schools--truly top-notch. A good parks system. Lots of youth programs, sports, town ice rink and pool, etc. Lots of shopping. Quite easy-going about ethnicity since Buffalo and Western New York have a long tradition of attracting immigrants.
Taxes are quite high, but services quite good. They clear the streets from the snow quite well. Winters can be long and snowy, but people do get out to ski, sled, ice skate, play hockey, etc.
If you're going to open or pursue a business in the area, Amherst is the place to do it. It's the most prosperous large suburb around Buffalo.
A lot of good food (though the city of Buffalo itself has the real variety and quality)--beware putting on too much weight during the winters!
Strong community spirit for a suburban area--an offshoot of Buffalo's strong community traditions.
Beware that Buffalo itself, sadly, has a worsening crime and jobs situation. If you explore the city, be careful. Get advice from locals first or invite one to come with you--it's easy to end up in a dangerous neighborhood before you know it. It's a city with real soul, but you do have to be careful.
Great summer weather. Rarely too hot, usually a nice breeze. A lot of camping, fishing, boating, etc., opportunities nearby on the Great Lakes and to your east and south.
You'll hear a lot of talk, both on this forum and in the Buffalo area itself, about job-loss and general decline. This is quite true, but you do want to put it perspective. One reason Buffalo's decline looms so large in people's minds is that for many decades, it was an incredible powerhouse of manufacturing. Thousands upon thousands of poor immigrants could work their way into the middle class with Buffalo's manufacturing jobs. The decline of these is painful--but, to a degree, looms large by contrast. The way that rust on a great old car really stands out, because the original car was so beautiful. But the area remains one of great character and some enduring, if changing, opportunities.
And come spring, it's easy to forget all the gloom up there: Go fishing--with a lunch of just-baked calzones!
Best of luck on your move.

Amherst is one of the lowest crime places in the country, there is very little crime there. It's a big suburb with numerous malls, so shopping is the main thing to do there. Also there are some bars/restaurants up there. For more extensive urban kinds of entertainment, you'd normally have to go into the city of Buffalo.

Amherst is the cusp of upper class living - outside of the urban decay of buffalo and there are many things to do there. YOu will almost never need to leave because you can most likely find everything you need.
I know Amherst get's rated as Americas Safest City year after year.
