I don't think buffalo state college is more expensive. And it's hard to say whether buffalo state is a liberal art college. Both buffalo state college and UB are SUNY schools, the expense is almost the same.

Buffalo State is a State Univ of NY COLLEGE.
SUNY Buffalo is a State Univ. of NY UNIVERSITY.
SUCB (Buffalo State) is on Elmwood and is liberal arts and education majors and also a fantastic art conservation program (that is a masters). If you are a local, generally you went to SUCB for an Education degree.
SUNYAB (State University of NY at Buffalo) has virtually every degree under the sun, from bachelors up to many graduate degreees as MD, JD, Pharmacy, DDS, Architecture... you can go on and on.
Both are SUNY schools. SUCB is not a private/expensive school
UB Student Response Center - Estimated Cost of Attendance - Undergraduate Undergrad link to SUNY Buffalo cost
Student Accounts Office - Buffalo State College - Tuition and Fees - Undergraduate Undergrad link to SUCB cost
Both schools have in-state undergrad tuition for spring 2008 of $2,175 and out-of-state of $5,305. There is no difference. Fees at the two schools are highly variable.

Jesse, SUNY Buffalo is mostly on North Campus for undergrads. If you are coming from CA, and will have a car ( think you posted that elsewhere), living on N. Campus will be no problem. Traffic here is really minimal compared to CA. Easiest to do? Spend a year in the dorms and check out the city and find an apt. You can easily get over to Elmwood in a short time on the expressways.
Academically, SUNY is superior to SUCB (college on Elmwood). I have degrees from BOTH schools.

Please do not let these posts deter you! I went to SUNY Buffalo (along with 4 other SUNY schools...long story) and it is a fantastic school! I HIGHLY recommend it. Facilities are great, professors are very knowledgable and the campuses are gorgeous.
I lived on South Campus and on North Campus. To be honest, the area around south campus is not the safest, but the campus itself is indeed safe. On the same note, it wasn't the safest but by no means did I feel like I couldn't walk around. It wasn't like that. There are plenty of bars w/in walking distance that my friends and I would frequent. This is the reason people like south campus over north campus.
The deal w/ north campus is - you won't have any issues w/ saftey but you will be in a more secluded area. North Campus is SOO BIG that students don't even care. Everything they need is on campus (stores, billards, etc).
If SUNY Buffalo is on your list keep it there! I regret tranferring to other SUNY schools that proved to be below par.

Jesse, SUNYAB (the Univ) is fabulous. The campus has also been built (in many areas) with walkways connecting buildings so you basically can stay inside a lot of the time ( you are warm weather; that may appeal) From N. Campus (which has dorms and MANY apartments around it now) you can get to S. Campus in a really short time and there is a bus ( The Buffalo Stampede) which the Univ. owns and runs about every 15 min to half hour.... S. Campus is fairly safe in the day. If you want to wander in the neighborhood, it is still reasonably decent in many places. I worked nearby for 8 years; at that point, the area was going downhill. I wouldn't walk around there anymore, but it isn't total ghetto.
You are from LA -- this isn't equivalent to what is written to describe LA ghetto. Go on the far east side and you have gangs, but it still isn't as bad or as many as out there. Here, they are low grade thugs in the ghettoes.
If you want totallly "Safe", you better either get into a time capsule or find a tiny college in the middle of nowhere.... even that might not be safe enough for you.
Quadcore and smellsbad are 2 posters on anything against the city.
