SUNY Buffalo and Neighborhood
Just wondering how the area near SUNY Buffalo is. Safe? Lively? I think I'm going to apply there. Also, I heard something about Elmwood Village. What is there to do? Is that like the local hangout spot?

Safe? NO! Rape and Gunfire! It's as bad as it gets. The neighborhood around the SUNY Buffalo Campus is horrible. Apply to Amherst Campus. To say that Buffalo Nightlife is Livley is an understatement, check out this link from the theater district shooting less than 2 weeks ago:

Well,I go to SUNY buffalo. I have to admit the neighborhood is not that good.
The north campus is located in Amherst where is pretty safe but rural. South campus is much smaller, the medical school is there. South campus is very dangerous, just along the main street. Do you know winspear and bailey ave? They are very clost to south campus and there are tons of crimes there. My friends who lived near winspear ave had heard gun shot last semester. Robbery and assualt are even more common.
I can give you some links from UB news.
Campus Alert: Strong-Armed Robbery - UB NewsCenter strong-armed robbery
University Police Issue Warning About Ellicott Robberies - UB NewsCenter another robbery
WARNING: Suspects sought in sexual assault complaint - UB NewsCenter sexual assault in Amherst
If you want, there are tons of bad news to read. I hope this can scare you.
The neighborhood is really dangerous and unfriendly. I even dare not walk on the street.

If you'll be driving, then Elmwood Village is a great place...15 minutes from the North campus (where most of your classes as an undergrad would be anyway). It's a nice mixture of young families and college students in this area.
I would agree that University Heights (near UB south campus) can be dangerous. Like most places though, if you pay attention and act smart you are generally safe.

why are you so hell bent on bashing buffalo? you really gotta get a life, i mean, find a friend or something because this whole chip on your shoulder thing has to stem from somewhere and i think it has something to do with how much of a loser you are and how little you have done with your life. now **** off and find something constructive to do.
UB south, aka University heights, is not as bad as portrayed. Main street as you would notice if you actually visited the area is like a brick wall between white and black nrighborhoods. if you are scared of black people then stay away from the south side and you will be alright. North Buffalo is minutes away from south campus and is one of the nicest areas in the city. however, they are right, UB north is in the suburbs and can be characterized as "pleasantville" if that is your thing.

If you are talking about buffalo state college, it is a much smaller more expensive liberal arts college located on elmwood ave on the upper west side of buffalo. it is about 10-15 minutes away from UB south.

by the way
It is true the north campus is in a lot safer area than the south, but there are problems even around the north campus. Shortly before I got out of Dodge, there was some nasty incident where two guys dragged a female undergraduate out of a parking lot on the north campus and took her to an empty building and repeatedly raped her. It was a cold winter day so they could conceal their appearance by putting on lots of winter clothes. Here's the link News - UB Student Reports Rape on North Campus
In general though that area is generic suburbia, with low crime. I agree with the others about the south campus though, the area directly to the southeast is a gang-infested sh*thole. But you can go very short distances to the north and west and get decent areas by Buffalo standards.
