Lovejoy is primarily a blue collar area in Buffalo. It is relatively safe, however it borders on some truly unsafe areas. Since you are not from Buffalo you could easily wander into some parts of town you wish you hadn't. Most of the people who live in Lovejoy have deep roots in the neighborhood. You will have a hard time fitting in, especially if you are only living there part of the year. Honestly I can't think of any reason why you should buy a house there. You would be much better off using the money you would spend (waste) on a house in Lovejoy staying in hotels and visiting the many scenic and interesting parts of the USA.

I live in the Lovejoy area and I have to say I have never seen houses stripped of copper or cops roaming the streets because the residence are in danger. We need to get our facts straight before we slam an entire community.

Even the police in Amherst, the 2nd safest city/town in the nation, carry a firearm. It's the abandoned houses on the east side that are stripped for copper, and homes in the suburban areas have random acts of robberies.

Lovejoy = not nice.
Go a little further south or a bit northeast.

Go farther south and over toward OLV and that area. Move out toward the far east city area, if you want the city. Houses are nice; many areas still owner occupied, but you have to really check. [BTW, if no one told you, the Irish Center is on Abbott; that area was Irish settled and there is still a stong cultural attitude, even for those who move away from the area]

you'll notice that I also said I would not leave a home unoccupied anywhere you live for a period of time. If you check with your homeowners insurance, you will notice that if your home, regardless of where it is is unoccupied, your insurance will go up and they may require you to make it more secure - leaving a home unoccupied for a length of time is foolish - there are reasons for that ......

Be more specific
You guys are talking to a person from Ireland.
to say some parts of Lovejoy are ok and others aren't does him a lot of good.
Those who know the area can also make a good guess at the safer and not so safe parts.
I had asked about the old visitation church area on 1066 Lovejoy once before. What about Hennepin park?

The reasons why are simple:
1) Lack of jobs
2) Government is the largest employer
3) Young people are leaving in droves
4) Population decline
5) Boarded up houses all over the city (7000 slated for demolition)
6) Highest taxes in the NATION
7) CRIME
8) really rotten public schools
9) government corruption
10) the weather sucks
These are just a few.

Ah yes....the Irish in South Buffalo. The "clan" system they brought from the old country is still very much alive and well. They pretty much ran the city into the ground with the government jobs and nepotism. There are literally hundreds of people of Irish heritage from a few families running the city even today, despite an African American mayor. Those days are numbered and they know it. Buffalo politics are as corrupt as it gets.
I don't know how it is in Ireland today but if you want to see what it was like 75 years ago, come to South Buffalo! Everyone works for the City!

That's interesting, because Syracuse is kind of the same way with many people of Irish descent in government positions. Our South Buffalo is the Tipperary Hill neighborhood on the Western end of the city of Syracuse.
