Buffalo, I need your help
People of the buffalo area and i am thinking about relocating there. I am sick of living in this jungle (miami,fl) i wanted to ask you a few things if thats ok. hows the job market in wny and where are the best places to live. I have been to buff like 6 times but its always been for a bills game and im in and out. I am getting married very soon and Miami is not kind for people who are starting out and want to rise a family. My fiancée and I are both college grads. I'm a sales manager for big company and she is a school teacher. we make good money and live ok but we will never beable to buy a home here, ect.
Thanks
rob

Rob
The job market depends really on what type of work you do, for some this market is terrible, for others it is great!
As long as she can get certified in NYS for teaching, she shouldn't have a problem. Others will disagree with me, however my friend just started subbing last year and has been offered a permanent position twice. Another young lady who used to work for me had no problem getting a job in a few schools, so basically I would say it depends on how good a teacher she is, and I am sure she would do fine.
You do sales? Can your company relocate you here? If not, then depending on your type of sales you do, you should be able to find a job here. Sales as we both know isnt for everyone, so I have found that really good sales people are hard to come by.
As far as the best places to live? That would depend on what you like and what you want. I love the suburbs, many folks on here prefer the city life. Stay away from the east side and the west side of Buffalo. If you are concerned about schools, then Clarence and Williamsville are continually rated #1 and #2 every single year. The homes are a little pricier but tend to hold their value very well.
Ask away.....................................

Outer laying areas of buffalo are the nicer places to live: Kenmore,Cheektowaga,Amherst,Clarence,Hamburg,Grand Island,Clarence,West Seneca,Depew(iffy)
Inner City Buffalo with better neighborhoods: Elmwood Village,Allentown,Delaware Park Area, North Buffalo
Areas to avoid living within buffalo, and outer laying areas: Lackawanna,Niagara Falls,Lower West Side,East Side,Riverside, and some parts of south Buffalo
Good Schools: Cheektowaga,Williamsville,Clarence,West Seneca ,Canisius(private),City Honors(Buffalo Public School),Buffalo Performing Arts(Buffalo Public School),St.Joe's(Private),Hutch Tech(Buffalo Public School),Kenmore
House Prices- Buffalo:20k-80k(tops),Kenmore Area(50k+),Clarence(60k+),West Seneca(60k+),Cheektowaga(60k+),Grand Island(60k+),Hamburg(50k+)

Now, I have to disagree. I'd check w/ some of the local college's. They'll confirm, new teaching grads in this area are having a hard time getting jobs. Unless you want to work in pretty much undesirable schools.
As for the job market-- personally- we're looking to leave. Just 10yrs ago I could have my pick of jobs in my field (medical related- not nursing- that is still booming here). Now, I'm lucky if there is 1 job posted per week. My husband's company in Hamburg- has cut salaray twice in 2 yrs to stay a float. His pay is down 45%. He cannot leave because he watches all the time and there is just nothing out there.
About the only economic plus- housing is reasonable around here.

The Job market in Buffalo is constantly dying! Most of the people that are telling you that your job prospects are high probably don't have real Jobs! The Job market in Buffalo is very competative and is getting worst each and everyday! Civil and municipal service workers Teachers, Police and Fire presently have wage and Hiring Freezes. And The private sector is totally gone! To Mexico and South America to China and India!

Glad we're not the only ones looking to leave. The job market here is horrible! My husband got laid off last month and there have been only 2 jobs in his field, one of which was already filled by the time he applied. I have also been looking for almost 3 months and have found nothing. It's disheartening to get on the job boards and see multiple jobs for both of us in other cities. We'd be out of here in a heartbeat only we have two kids that we're hoping not to uproot, but it doesn't look hopeful that we'll be able to stay.
Robert, if you're in sales, you'll probably be able to find something, but I'm not sure about your wife. I'd look into it before I came. We moved back here 7 years ago and the job market has not improved in that time.

Parts of Depew near Cheektowaga are not so hot, but others near lancaster are lovely. So is Lancaster and so is Alden. Houses are relatively inexpensive in Depew and parts of Lancaster($60-200K+ The high priced are new builds)
You shouldn't call the City "good" neighborhoods "Inner City".... inner city is the bad areas.
Performing Arts has dropped down in quality and City Honors is exam entrance ( best openings at Gr. 5 and Gr. 8)
