Default Buffalo's street cams - vote: good or bad?

I wrote a post on my blog about the City of Buffalo stepping up their attention of surveillance cameras on street corners.

(picture used with permission)

Within my own opinion of the idea that I support, I'll share a few comments I've expressed

Quote:
Pushing drugs on a street corner is not an invasion of privacy, nor is waiting for a bus when the cams are rolling. Everyone I talk to in my neighborhood are welcoming of the six cams being set up on corners that are known “troubled spots” in the community. The City of Buffalo Surveillance Cameras are for the safety of the general public, no matter what a San Fran study says about Buffalo

It’s only “Big Brother” if you’re doing something wrong!
Quote:
I don’t condone such abuse of power (if there is any), out on the street is not private though, and not any different than shopping at the Mall…. security to look out for shop-lifters or invasion of the same privacy when deciding over boxers or briefs, relax fit or flair jeans?

Street cams can see people going into or coming out of stores/businesses, they can see who goes in which direction, and while investigating a robbery where a gun was held to a cashier’s head & threats to shot her, details of the hour’s activities out on the street can find the get-away car.

Having the city know I take a walk in my neighborhood everyday is a small price to pay in knowing that the community as a whole is being monitored of those whom are doing wrong.
I'd like to broaden this topic to a larger audience and poll other's opinions.

Please indicate if you're not a resident of the city of Buffalo.

Stick the cameras in drug and ghetto areas and the problems will move to other areas. They are already on the 33 expressway and east-west roads to look for cars fleeing into/out of the city for crimes.

Keep the left wing nanny state in power and more cameras will come. They need to take care of you.

Baltimore Maryland has flooded the streets with surveillance cameras on pole and floodlights at the end of suspect blocks. Baltimore has become a police state. The cameras are a definite invasion of privacy. Their primary use is to deter murders.

Default The Nanny State

For those who have a fear of being followed, it’s only “Big Brother” if you’re doing something wrong!

The neighborhood I live in, it's the largest police district with the least number of police officers. Unlike the East & West sides of the city (Buffalo), while crimes do occur, it is less. Cams are being installed in "safer" parts of the city as well to prevent the shifting of trouble spots.

Buffalo Transplant, I thought the one on the 33 is a traffic cam because I've seen one on the 90 at the 400 too.

I agree. Buffalo at least is trying to do SOMETHING! I say keep them and put in more if needed. I don't want it to be a police state, but it's in a desperate situation at this time. Between all the welfare recipients and the drug trafficking, it's a huge problem. Does anyone even know how many of those boarded up homes actually have people living in them?????!

Take a long slow drive on the 33 coming from the airport in and look very carefully at all the lightpoles in the center, all the way past ECMC and at least up to the 198. There are cameras all over. A friend of one daughter told us they were erected to track possible "used in a crime" cars ( he is a cop). They went up between 2000 and 2002. You just didn't notice them. I am sure they are other places as well.

I knew they were up there, I was told they were for studying traffic. Thanks for clearifying Though.

London, while you have touched on some of the other aspects of how some neighborhoods have become crime areas, I thinking the biggest part is when people in the community stop caring about where they live. They eventually leave and the "bad" increases from there.

Where I live, not saying it's 100% perfect, but I think having the cameras up is a step in the right direction of crime prevention.

Agreed. Unfortunately we ended up doing the same thing. We left.
Moved to the suburbs after we had our children.
We used to live right across the street from Schiller Park on Zelmer!
It was as if in a day the neighborhood changed. All of a sudden people were getting mugged (I did in my back yard!) houses broken into, all kinds of crimes.
Much of it had to do with the increase of crack. This was back in the late 80's early 90's.

I remember the area well, we saw the same changes in the Holy Name area around the mid to late 80's. While I have changed neighborhoods over the years, I haven't left Buffalo yet though. If only cams had been used back then.
