3 large gang fights last night at Walden Galleria Mall 100's were fighting, starting fires, smashing windows, stealing, assaulting customers & mall security. Cheektowaga Police requested mayday & help from N.Y. State Police, troopers ,Erie County Sheriff, Border Patrol, Transit police, & neighborhooding town police Depts. The mall was closed and put in lock down
The people the malls want to shop there will increasingly spend their money elsewhere.
I hate to be blunt but the honest truth is...
Having a bunch of young, comparatively low income, inner city or suburban youth, unescorted or un supervised with no legitimate purpose to be in the mall is a recipe for disaster and for keeping actual shoppers who spend money away. Its a terrible strategy for revenue generation.
Coincidentally it's also why I avoid going anywhere near that place past the early afternoon and why I carry.
People flat out do Not want to deal with that not take their families into that environment.
I used to walk in the Galleria from when it opened until a few years ago. I must have walked at least 1000 times. I noticed more Canadians than anything. I was never there after 5 when these kinds of activities occurred. They have bus service from the city which is just a few miles away. Its not surprising that there is an occasional flareup. There were 2 or 3 guards not armed which certainly would not deter a large group looking to cause trouble. That video looked like something out of a 1950's monster movie with people streaming out screaming. They already have some regulations regarding teenagers:
"Parental Escort Policy MB-18. Walden Galleria has a parental escort policy from 4:00pm until closing on Friday and Saturday evenings. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 21 years of age or older."
Since this was a Wednesday it didn't have any effect.
