I was home in WNY for Christmas. I think I went to Wegmans at least 4 times that week!

The Budweys in Tonawanda is the original one. It is owned by a family that originally were solely butchers. The meat is super. I don't know if the Buffalo one can compare.

Another place with fantastic meat is Sloan market ( in Sloan, naturally). It is 1 block south of Broadway but I do not know the street name... just how I get there! It has little other than meat.

For category of "odd places to find good stuff", try the Sav-A-Lot stores. I can buy my produce at half the price of any other supermarket. They often have excellent brands on sale. Also, there are always spices for $1.

Actually Wegmans is not only nicer than Tops, but I think the prices are much better as well. Wegmans hands down.

I would say Wegmans, Budweys, then Tops and then Dashs.

We really like Wegmans, but we also like going to the Lexington Coop (on Elmwood) - it's a little bit pricier, but we like buying from local growers. Also, there is a more extensive choice of bulk produce (those that come from the vending bins, like granola, nuts, flour, etc).

As much as I love Wegmans, I really do, I have been going to Tops because with the Bonus Card you recieve points that can be used to get a discount on gas (only as Tops gas stations). One trip to Tops we had about 700 bonus pints which took off .70$ off the gallon- each gallon. With gas prices being so high- the deals are worth it. But for specialty items- its Wegmans 100%. I had heard, when I was living in Florida, that Publix invites (hires) Wegmans employees to help them improve their stores. Not sure if that was a rumor- but if you have seen Publix lately it really has become a great market.

But both companies are headquartered in WNY.

Not sure about Tops actually I think they were bought, but sticking with WNY.

Dash's on Main St. in Clarence is doing nicely now. I am impressed with a lot of the items. They also carry ShurFine brands , so I don't need to go to ShurFine in Akron.

Have you looked into the Farmers Markets that are around? A good one is at Bidwell Parkway (thats on the Elmwood Strip) Saturdays 8am? - 1pm. I have to recommend the Native Offerings stand, which is the only stand thats 100% organic and the White Cow Dairy, who make their own incredible yogurts and yogurt-drinks. There's also plently of other stuff and its all locally grown so you will be helping out the B'lo economy by shopping there.

But fave grocery store - yeah, that'd have to be Wegmens! Although I do like the Indian grocery store on Sheridan - Super Bazaar (3218 Sheridan Drive) too.
