Default Downtown Construction Update

There is quite a bit of construction lately in Downtown Buffalo. Cranes are seen in various areas for new projects and towers. It really feels as if Buffalo has finally turned the corner and is looking to the future.

The former Dulski Federal Building, then called 200 Delaware, now the new official name - the Avant, which means forward in French, is speeding ahead to completion. They named it the "Avant" to portray the fact that Buffalo is looking to the future.

The rehabilitaion of the 16 story, 400,000 sq.ft. building will be completed by June 1st 2009. It will include a 150 room Embassy Suites Hotel, 37 condo units, and 128,000 sq.ft. of office space. Will be the first ALL glass building in Buffalo.

From this:

To THIS:

The New Federal Courthouse:

Construction on the $123 million, 10-story glass structure began last October and should be completed by mid-2010 under current plans. New York City-based Kohn Pederson Fox Architects designed the 268,000 sq.ft. building. The firm also designed M&T Center at Fountain Plaza (former Goldome) and the new Buffalo Niagara International Airport terminal.

The giant lattice-boom hydraulic crane has a lifting capacity of 275-tons and can reach to 400 feet. Steel work is expected to take four months.

soon to be...

Waterfront Place Tower:

Waterfront Place will feature a 13-story tower with 49 condominium units and 15, three-story townhomes built adjacent to a private park. Having all condos in the tower already taken, work on yet another tower, a twin to the first, will be going up by next year.

Should be finished by September:

Last, the Buffalo Creek Casino:

Work continues on the $333 million casino complex, the most expensive private-sector real estate development in Buffalo’s history. The project includes a 206-suite, 22-story luxury hotel tower, a 90,000 sq.ft. gaming hall and 2500 space parking facility. Steel work is now underway.
(from Buffalorising.com)

Soon to be by summer 2009:

These are the main great projects all underway or near completion in Downtown Buffalo. It is certainly generating a lot of excitement around town.

I wish a lot would say it though.

So many people swim in a sea of negativity about Buffalo. When something new comes along, no one is happy because they want it all the same.... only to complain that it's "the same old Buffalo". No pleasing some people.

A lot of this "new development" (commercial slip, for example) is at the hands of our tax dollars, and many have complained (myself include) that downstate NY gets everything, now is the time for upstate and I couldn't be happier. No matter the bargaining chips tossed on the tables of political negociations (and terms of re-elections), at the end of the day, changes are coming to our city... good changes and that's a breath of fresh air.

Oh I know! So many are so negative. One of my goals in life is to boost Buffalo's reputation as much as I can -especially through pictures, and hope for the best in new development. I was somewhat exaggerating the fact that many of us do, however with these new developments, certain people's impressions on the city aren't so bad. Even though they like to pick out every detail and bad thing about it. Even something like " I don't like the tint of glass on that new building" Oh my, it make's me cringe.
