I see so few to none in Rochester, and I believe Buffalo is far better than that town. Though it is somewhat nice, there are multiple reasons why I believe that Buffalo is actually more prestigious and a better place to live - if you have a job. It's only a matter of time before Buffalo booms, (it's already showing signs), so be ready and come quick before the rush!
Yeah, Buffalo is absolutely wonderful for the arts. While I think that the Elmwood and Allen Arts Festivals are pretty tame, I'm still happy that they happen. The Infringement Festival is great. There's always something to do, lots of good places to hear music, lots of outdoor activity in the summer. This summer has been depressing though, with all the greenhouse rains curtailing many outdoor happenings...

I've been to Rochester and its very nice but the people there talk about coming to Buffalo when they want to "do something" and that there is no music scene whatsoever. But I did go to an exellant mexican-food joint there - something I havent found in B'lo as of yet. Rochester also has something called "Second Storie" a once-a-wk mash-up of a farmers market and mini arts fest which is pretty cool - way better than B'lo's equivalent - the Indie Market at Pearl St which absolutely bites (thats not a dis to the artists BTW but rather the organizer - who plagarized Second Storie's website even....)

I hope Buffalo booms, sure do. I hope they create more jobs in my field one day too so I can come back and live like a king.

Its seems like you guys have not been to Rochester that much because you are way off in your assessment. Minus the major league sports, they are more similar than most cities. Buffalo does not have a much more enhanced night life and arts scene. As somebody who has been out in both cities multiple times, I can tell you that they are pretty much the same. Buffalo seems to be bigger on neighborhood bars though. For the arts, they are pretty even with the festivals and who they attract.(I don't know where you get that Buffalo is gaining population)
If you don't think there are any projects going on in Roch, you have not been there. There are multiple housing projects in downtown underway. They are making plans for a new corporate headquarters, a new law school and a new developments by the Eastman theater.
Nobody talks about going to Buffalo for something to do. I don't know who told you that. You can get the same stuff here that you can get there minus the sports. The comment about the music scene is extremely off base. There is an outstanding music scene for a city its size. Venues like the penny arcade, bug jar, montage, armory, water street, etc, bring in great acts from all over the place.
Buffalalonian, its great that you love your city, but you keep making very off base and incorrect comments while putting down neighboring cities. These places are more similar than different.

I'm quoting a musician who has lived in Rochester for the last 3 yrs. He used to live in Buffalo and it is his assessment that there is more music (perhaps he means more variety of music) in Buffalo. He also says he had a much easier time finding people to form bands with.

Btw, I'm not putting down Rochester. Different places have different things, whatever.

Thats one person that has lived in this area for a short amount of time. There could be a number of reasons as to why he can't find bandmates. I am very much into music and have met people that have told me what you have, but the cities are switched. Doesn't mean its true.
There is a great variety of music here. I can attend a wide variety of shows ranging from death metal to indie to rap to orchestras. Compared to many other cities, both Roch and Buffalo offer many opportunities for music.

I'm sorry but I disagree 95% with what you said. I'm sorry, but that's my opinion. And as long as I live, I will never associate Buffalo with being so similiar to Rochester. Doesn't make sense, thanks for trying to convince me otherwise, but I highly disagree that Rochester is like Buffalo. Sure there are some basic similarities, but seriously, IMO, Rochester sucks. And I will not argue the point any further, I'm just stating some of my opinion, and while loving the city I'm in, can't see much at all in Rochester that is better or simliar to the Buff. Now, if you were to compare Buffalo to other cities like Pittsburgh or Cleveland, that's a different story. Both those cities are very much like Buffalo, and would not argue that they are better. However, I truly do not think that Rochester is the place to go for a job, etc, etc, etc.... My last choice.

where exactly have you BEEN in Rochester? Your assessment is true for maybe the 14621 area code and that's about it. Buffalo has major league sports and a slightly larger population (used to be much larger, but between 1960 and 2000 Erie County lost a couple hundred thousand residents while Monroe County added nearly 200,000). I love Rochester and think Buffalo is great...mostly because it is so simiar to my hometown. You are way off base and actually coming off as quite pompus and rude...something I think that SEPERATES you with most people I've ever met from Buffalo. There probably are no two cities more alike in the country IMHO.

My brother in law Mike just moved up here from New Jersey. He has been to both cities a lot, and he hates Rochester. He says there's nothing to do, it's dead, and the people are snobby. He also says Buffalo is much better and would never move to Rochester.

Just another perspective. And I knew I would get yelled at. HEY we all have our opinions and I will not let you destroy mine. So, come on, really I'm not here to argue, rather to state my perception of Rochester. Buffalo puts Rochester to shame IMO! The reason I live in Buffalo is because of it's past and the amount of possiblity and potential there is here. Buffalo and Rochester's source of Fresh water will make them boom in years to come, but for now, Buffalo is sooo much better. IMO!!!

Buffalonian, I like your loyalty to Buffalo, but there's no reason to say that Rochester sucks, it seems a little juvenile and spiteful. And usually when someone says "there's nothing to do here", it tells more of the person saying so than of the area, it's something you normally hear from teens just about anywhere. Rochester certainly doesn't lack in things to do. I agree with you that Buffalo has more potential and it's exciting to see things developing on the waterfront finally, and Rochester does seem to have a little snobbiness that you don't see in Buffalo. I like Buffalo a little better, but I love both cities and I will always root for all of western NY.

Are there snobs in Rochester...abosuletly, espeically in some of the wealthir suburbs like Pittsford, Mendon or Brighton. But it is incredibly hypocritical to say there is a snobby vibe here when you are saying that Buffalo is so incredibly superior and classier than "dumpy old Rochester".
