Pittsburgh is not like Buffalo - nor is Cincy or Columbus or many of the places I recently went to look at old buildings. Buffalo has the best cheap old buildings and unlike Pittsburgh there is little traffic. Pittsburgh was not a fun place to drive. Buffalo has that feel that you're in another era way more than these other places.

Buffalo has one huge negative - real estate taxes and the attitude of the Property and Taxation Dept. The taxes are 7 times what they are in my part of Texas, and more than PA, Oh, and West Virginia. Otherwise I love Buffalo.

sorry just saw your response. i grew up in north west PA, now live in florida.

i've been a die hard bills fan my whole life, and have spent limited time in buffalo but i am in love with the city. i would move there tomorrow if i could, however my fiancee wants to be closer to her family in jersey so buffalo is not an option for her.

I see, and it's great that you've been a great Bills fan for much of your life! Maybe one day you can live here in the summer and Florida in the winter .

We use to live in Tonawanda. Upon retirement we moved to Ft Worth, TX. If the NY state taxes were not so high, we would move back to the Buff area in a minute. Buffalo is a great place!!!!!!

Baltimore I'd love someone to comment on!
I've lived in both - Buffalo as a kid growing up and then 5 years for school in Baltimore. It's hard to describe Baltimore - it's got an industrial feel like Buffalo, but the sense of decay in the city itself seems to be a lot greater. Bigger population, one of the highest murder rates in the country (see "The Wire" - it's NOT a joke), and a less friendly environment for raising a family. On the other hand, they've done a better job of developing their city: Baltimore's Inner Harbor is beautiful, the historic districts (e.g. Mt. Vernon) really are charming, and there's a steady influx of investment capital that's being pulled into the city for future planning. There's corruption there also, but I couldn't help but get the feeling that B'more's politicians were slightly less incompetent than ours. I still can't believe that I'm saying that.

Regarding incompetent politicians and administrators: I wholeheartedly believe that putting UB's main campus in the middle of suburbia was one of the dumbest f******g things that our local elites have done to us over the last couple of decades. It's a horrible joke that the "flagship school" of the SUNY system isn't even in Buffalo. In the case of Baltimore, having JHU located directly in the city has been a major asset to the city. The amount of federal and private money that the school brings in for its various research projects ends up keeping a lot of ppl. in the city employed (I believe that the university and hospital are the BIGGEST employer in the state of MD), as well as keeping Baltimore on the national map.

Sportswise...Ravens have won a Super Bowl. The Bills are still working on it.

Rochester and Buffalo are as identical as two cities can get. I grew up in Rochester and now I go to school in Buffalo. It's the same city/metro area, minus the two major pro teams. And Mighty Taco.
