Why do people always say Buffalo but mean somewhere else in Erie County?
I've been seeing a lot of posts lately of people saying they'd like to move to Buffalo, or to return to Buffalo, but when asked, they'll say an area outside of the City of Buffalo, yet within Erie County?
Why do people always say "Buffalo" but don't mean they are considering the actual city? Why not say Erie County, or Amherst, or Cheektowaga, or West Seneca, or Alden, or any other place? I don't mean to sound so particular, would anyone say Walmart but mean Target?
To me, the City of Buffalo is more than just name recognition in a subject title.

Sorry about the mistake
I hope its not offensive when someone says Buffalo and means another city in Erie County. Being from the south I don't quite know how the burbs are spread out. My husband is 3rd generation born and raised in Cheektowaga but still refers to "Buffalo" when talking to me about growing up there. So thanks for the correct information... Lesson learned!

This is just a generalization that I wanted to ask for a while now. T'wasn't intended towards any one in particular, just an observation I had noticed.
I'm really not mad nor offended, just a wonder is all.

Even though I visit my parents in Lockport or family in Amherst, Grand Island, etc, I always say I'm going to Buffalo. Alot of people from Rochester don't know some of the suburb towns.

Much like one referring to Spencerport as Rochester?

When I lived in Fairport, we all considered it Rochester. Now that I live in downtown Buffalo... I think I will call it Erie County.

I completely understand. We live on the Georgia/Alabama line. Lots of little towns/city's within a 50 mile radius. It's also no different than when southerners stereotype northerners and vice versa. You really don't know unless live there. I made my own decision though the last time we visited there. People ARE very friendly up north!

lol. Buffalo is Buffalo, but if you're living in Williamsville, would/should you say Buffalo? If you were at Sears, would you say you're in JCPenny even though it's in the same mall? Yes, it's the Buffalo area, as is a Rochester area, or a Syracuse area, I think the word "area" makes a world of difference.
What gets me though is when the telemarketers call and assume I can see the Statue of Liberty, assuming NYS is only NYC. It's 400 miles away!
