Areas close to Roswell Park
Hello - Considering reloacting up to Buffalo from the south for a position at RPCI, husband in IT, 2 kids, 3 pets - would probably rent before thinking about buying. Looking for an area with good schools, good commute (never drove in snow) and decent rent - especially if we have a hard time unloading our house here - but where we could stay in the same schools if we chose to buy after a year or two. Any information appreciated. Also any info about synagogues in area appreciated. Thanks

Depends on what type of enviornment you are looking for? What is important to you, to be close to where he is working, or schools for your children? Do you want a large yard for the kids and a neighborhood or do you like city living? Let us know and I am sure many will chime in

Priority is good schools first, easy commute to Roswell second; husband is in IT so job could be in any part of town, and not part of equation at this point. We have lived in suburbs for many years and that is fine, would like to rent a house or townhouse, with a yard if possible. It would be nice to be able to walk to parks and schools and what not. Cost of course is big issue as well, places where rent and houses are reasonable so if we chose to buy we could keep kids in same schools. Thanks!

The jcc is great, I do not belong myself, however I hear wonderful things about them.
As far as schools, business first does a great review on the schools, I dont believe this past years is out as of yet. here is last years
schools
If schools and burbs are what you like, Williamsville is a good fit - that being said, it is also going to be more expensive to rent there, a home will generally be 1200 - 2500 a month and you would be responsible for your own utilities. Apartments would be less expensive in some instances, but you are still looking at close to $1,000 a month for a three bedroom.
There are other burbs as well, that are nice and a little less expensive.

Roswell is pretty easy to get to from just about anywhere, I'd think. It's downtown, right off a major expressway. How old are your kids, if I may ask? Just wondering if you're looking at preschools, elementary, middle or high schools? There is a private Jewish school in the suburbs called the Kadimah School if that interests you. The Jewish Community Center has two locations, one in the suburbs, one in the city.
There are walkable neighborhoods in the city, of course. You'll probably get a lot of suggestions about the Elmwood Village neighborhood and North Buffalo where there is a pretty strong Jewish population. Both have a good amount of walkability. Delaware Park is in North Buffalo.
I don't know much about rental prices, but The Buffalo News lists real estate for rent: TinyURL.com - shorten that long URL into a Tiny URL
Whereabouts in the South are you?

My kids are in middle and elementary, so we would be interested in high school as well. Don;t need private, public is fine. I looked at some homes for sale in the North/Delaware Park area, how is that in terms of safety and schools and amenities, family friendly neighborhoods? The pricing looks great, too good to be true (coming from Florida)! Are there many houses for rent in the area - and is it mostly having to drive around and find them (unadvertised)? What I saw advertised was apartments. Is University District the same general area? I initially said suberbs because thats what I'm used to, but if city is safe and good schools and good neighborhoods, that would be fine too.

I can't tell you much about schools in North Buffalo -- I'm guessing your kids would go to Bennett High? Not sure about middle school. The neighborhood is pretty nice in terms of amenities, family-friendliness, etc. I'd look North of Hertel Ave, east of Parkside, but nothing too close to Main. Parkside would take you right down to the 33, which will take you to Roswell; Hertel has many shops and restaurants (including drugstores and a nice, smaller grocery store). Finding a whole house in NB for rent might be tough, though. Most of the single-family homes there are larger. The rentals tend to be 'two-flats' in North Buffalo, so called because the upstairs and downstairs are both apartments. They tend to be larger, 3-bedroom apts with kitchen, dining room, family room.
I'm probably confusing you, so I'll stop. :-) And yes, house prices up here do tend to look too good to be true when you're coming up from the South! We had the same experience... just remember we have ridiculously high property taxes here. :-\
