200K will get you a great home... my sister bought a beautiful 3 bedroom in Nth Buffalo, in a great neighborhood for 88k.... she had to take down some ugly wall paper but it was worth it. For your own curiosity check out Gurney Becker Bourne site to see some of the listings- I think you'll be surprised at the quality of homes.
88k? where in North Buffalo? Parkside, Crescent, Woodbridge...they go for 239k for a decent nothing fancy under 2500 sq ft old house sans garage with a basement full of asbestos.
How north is she? Albion?

The Parkside area is very nice- walking distance to the zoo and Delaware park. The homes there can be pricey and are older- but they have great character and it is very community orientated. They have a website- not sure of exact address- but you can google Parkside Association. Also, in Nth Buff, is the Hertel area. Homes on Depew, Morris, Woodbridge are high in price (beautiful but $$)- but on the other side of Hertel you can find more affordable housing- on Tacoma, Starin, Admiral, Wingate, North Drive, Parker. These are nearby Shoshone Park and the hertel strip (great restaurants and antique shops)- close to small and large grocery stores, Target, Blockbuster and more. This is also a very family friendly area- with great pizza!! Aside from Nth Buffalo- the Elmwood area (which Im sure many have reccommended). Its fun, hip and there is plenty to do. Homes are tricky- many are expensive (but beautiful in design and architecture) and quite a few have off street parking- but many streets can run beyond the strip and into less desirable areas- contain the search between Delaware and Richmond Avenues if possible. If you have any questions regarding these areas please ask away and I will help as best I can- Good Luck and welcome to Western New York!!
why don't you tell them about the elmwood village crime wave of late? It's been on TV all weekend..they shot a guy in the neck walking with his girlfriend after they demanded money ...

Or tell him about the bike path rapist at UB Amherst, or the murder in Cheektowaga. Or that the murder rate in the city of Buffalo is down 40% compared to last year. No community is immune from crime not even the suburbs. As a metro Buffalo has a lower crime rate than most, but it does still exist
