Default Books on Buffalo

Hi all,

I was hoping to get some feedback on some books published about the city of buffalo. I want to put one on my xmas list so i can learn more about the city and it's surrounding areas. one with photo's would be preferred so i can enjoy the beautiful sites buffalo has to offer.

i noticed on buffalo rising a new book out called capturing buffalo or something like that. i think it's new so many might not have heard of it.

any feedback is appreciated!

There are a few actually, a couple I know off the top of my head. The second is a non-fiction journal of a man growing up in Buffalo from the 30's to the 90's, I have actually started reading this one. The first one I own, but I havn't started reading it yet.

"High hopes, the rise and decline of Buffalo"

"Reflection of life in Buffalo"

The release party for "The fine Art of Capturing Buffalo" was tonight.
Here's the web site to order the book.

Theres a book on Buffalo architecture - somewhere I have it but can't find it. Its a paperback with lots of illustrations - Amazon can find it.

Once again Buffalo's future lies in its past - nothing of beauty should be torn down and the dumbass Assessment -Property Dept should drop the taxes on obsolete buildings - so they can afford to be kept.

I remember seeing a book on Buffalo during the first days of electricity, I learned that Buffalo was the 1st city with electricity. I was amazed at the pictures, it was really beautiful. In those days, Buffalo was hot and even still without Frank's hot sauce.

I have 2 on this:
Buffalo Architecture: A Guide ISBN 0-262-52063-X ( paperback) (1981)
Seeing Buffalo Maggie Headrick & Celia Ehlich (1978)

Both are older and you might find them at the used book stores. There are quite a few other good books on this - most are private publications, many w/out iSBN, like the Headrick & Eldrich book.

"City on the Lake: The Challenge of Change in Buffalo, NY" by Mark Goldman

"City on the Edge" also by Goldman

"The Last Fine Time." by Verylyn Klinkenborg (more of a novel, recommended with reservations)

City of Light by Lauren Belfer is a great fiction read that will give you a sense of what Buffalo was like back in 1901...

Also just read a good review of this:

Books: Buffalo Voices & Visions
