Default The Forgotten City

YouTube - The Forgotten City Trailer

I'm in Buffalo until the 23rd and you can see it here. When does anybody ever say anything about Buffalo? It's the 2nd poorest city in the country, the crime rate is on par with Philly, Atlanta, and Newark, workers are being laid off every day, it was blizzard-like outside here in Buffalo today (snowing sideways), 4 straight Super Bowl losses, they sell out a hockey season before the season even begins and they never win a Stanley Cup, they started an NHL trend by doing the Winter Classic when teh Sabres played an outdoor hockey game at the 70,000+ seat Ralph Wilson Stadium (home of the Bills) and sold out and they lost, they lose every Monday Night Football game, they have the highest gas prices in the country, but they're the nicest people you'll ever meet and they gave us Buffalo wings.

I've been watching the Channel 2 News here and it's absolutely depressing. The shelter's are all out of food, workers are laid off, schools are stuggling to save gas money, I saw homeless kids on the street sleeping on a bench while their father slept on the sidewalk in the snow, I see the decay of these architectural masterpieces, abandoned buildings, weeds growing through the cracks of the sidewalks, and just an overall gloomy, poor blue collar old industrial city.

What do you think of Buffalo? Will it ever make a comeback?

If I was the leader of the Buffalo Visitors Bureau, I would hire you in a second to do promotions for my city.

I think that is one of the cities that will never make a comeback. Here are a few reasons why...

1.) The weather is absolutely dreadful.

2.) It really does not have any drawing power. Why would anyone go to Buffalo? It has nothing to make ppl stay or go there.

3.) The huge north to south migration

Priceless. Poor Buffalo. However, I never count any city out. For all we know, NYC could fall like Rome in the next 50 years...who really can tell the future? That is why I hate those 20 year population projections--the economy might be very different.

BTW, I'm pretty sure Buffalo didn't start the Winter Classic trend...it was the NHL that organized that; the NHL wanted it in Pittsburgh first, but after the Penguins turned it down, they moved it to Buffalo. Better that it was in Buffalo anyway...it really isn't as snowy in Pittsburgh as people think.

Winter Classic started in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium. it was a game between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens.

There is no question Buffalo will make a comeback. Weather is not an issue because of so many other cities that share this similar type of weather, etc. We have huge fan bases that support our teams. The food here is great and the people are even better. We have a gigantic fresh water resource that we will build upon in the near future. Buffalo, New York is on the verge of a boom, and is in fact seeing small signs of it today, but must be studied to figure out.

Here's some more interesting video coverage from back in the day:
YouTube - Buffalo Street Gangs & The New Visions Unlimited Part 1

There are others with this on the right of this video.

That video really shouldn't be considered specific to Buffalo; there are bad inner-city neighborhoods where people get shot and killed all over the country. Buffalo's east side is DEFINITELY a rough neighborhood; but sadly, neighborhoods like that are a dime-a-dozen across the whole country...north to south, and east to west.

Interesting video. That really highlights the area of Buffalo that I have never seen as a white suburbanite. Buffalo is a very segregated town that is for sure.

You're right and this is unfortunately an issue in urban areas big and some small.
