My son just got accepted to Buffalo State. Has anyone on this forum attended that school? Any thoughts, pro/con? TIA.

I have. It has a good art and teaching curriculum. I wasn't the biggest fan as a non traditional student and the counseling and advising really stunk in the late 90's I don't know if has improved much.

Thanks, Mike. We are in the Rochester area & my son is leaning towards Buffalo State due to its proximity. He wants to major in business, though.

I found it to be a rather impersonal school, very large class sizes for most of the classes.
Make sure that your son has good study skills, it is pretty easy to get off track in a school like that.

I loved Buff State, but I went "recently" and as an adult. I attended from 2002 - 2004. I received a degree in Forensic Chemistry and although those classes tend to be smaller (due to lots of lab work), I did have some classes in lecture halls. I agree with the above poster who mentioned getting good study habits in place. The larger classes (still smaller than UB, where I also got a degree) tend to make it easy to skip class since no one would notice.
Also, its proximity to Elmwood Avenue (right there!) make it easy to go out at night/weekends to bars and nightlife.
If he has any interests/activities/extra curricular thoughts, have him check out the multitude of clubs and groups available. There are plenty.
Other than the basics, he should be fine and of course is still close enough to come home for visits!

A brother and sister graduated from there and liked it. There are things to do close by, but they also have good programs like Criminal Justice, Elementary Ed., Business and much more.

My wife is from Rochester. We live within walking distance to the school. Buff state will offer him the true college experience. They have a strong student community and a lot of good programs, I studied political science. He will do fine if he stays on top of the course requirements and major class fullfillments. make sure he speaks with an advisor and have hims top in the Student government office. Getting involved is great resume building.

I cannot thank you enough, folks. This gives me some excellent insight. He is currently looking at the the following 3 SUNY schools: Buff State, SUNY Potsdam & SUNY Plattsburgh. Does anyone have any sense of comparision between those 3? I know that being in an urban vs. rural setting is a big plus for Buff State, if a student is more inclined towards cities. TIA.

I've been to all three schools and I'd choose Buff State in a heart beat. A big part of undergrad is learning about yourself and maturing and Buffalo is a great place to do that. Your son will get out of school what he puts into it (can't stress this enough) so the quality of education at those schools should be comparable. I wonder why UB is off the list, though? They have more resources than any other SUNY school for most disciplines. Their business school is ranked highly, for example.
