Default Thinking of moving to Buffalo from UK..Any advice/Tips?

Hi People,
So , myself and my girlfriend (& Dog) are thinking of buying a house in Buffalo as the prices are quite attractive in relation to the UK prices..
We are late 20's and looking to start a family soon so we would be looking to settle in an area that is safe and not too old (no offence ) Any advise or info would be greatly appreciated.. Thanx

Welcome and glad to hear you're thinking of moving to Buffalo! If you're looking for areas that are not too old, then it sounds like you'd like to live in the suburbs. Amherst, Williamsville, Clarence, Lancaster, Elma, Orchard Park, Hamburg, Grand Island, and Wheatfield are all very safe communities near Buffalo, and would be a great family environment. All these towns have good school systems, with the top-rated ones being in Williamsville, Clarence, and Orchard Park.

The city proper also has nice areas for families as well, particularly "North Buffalo." The houses are not new, but the neighborhoods in this part of the city are very well-kept; thanks to vigilance and this neighborhood upkeep, the area is quite safe. The same holds true for areas of the city near Delaware Park and Elmwood Village. Living in the city gives you easy access to public transportation routes, more so than in the suburbs, and you get the upbeat vibe of living in an urban environment. Downtown Buffalo and the waterfront also has many new apartment lofts and condos. They are very classy, but of course these are much more expensive. In addition, you'd probably be better off in an actual house if you're starting a family. Good luck, and hope things work out!

Since you are still young, you might consider somewhere within walking distance to the Elmwood District and Delaware Park. This part of the city is very dog friendly and has a nice village feel to it (I walk everywhere around here, pleasant, lots of nice shops).

Good advice from everyone above. When you say the home prices are quite attractive, please explain further. Many times people will see homes for 10k and even though that may be an attractive price, there is a reason for that and I would steer clear from those particular areas. What price range were you looking at?

Let us know how it goes and what you decide. This is a great forum for getting the answers to yoru questions.

Depends on what ya want mate. I would not recommend Village of Lancaster, greater Lancaster is not bad. East of the village is real nice, quieter, and closer to a country feel. If I were staying here, I would move east of Lancaster, even if I had to drive into Buffalo 25-40 miles roundtrip a day.

Some of the south towns are nice, but they are more expensive, and the houses don't have any character (maybe you like new homes though).
