I wouldn't call it an undeserved rep..
Take a ride from the south towns, up the 190 going by the downtown area. The area looks terrible! Rust belt for sure. I don't know why so many people stand up how terrible the outskirts of the city looks. Like an absolute dump.
There are some great areas, and I hope the future brings Buffalo more, because the past has been quite hard-luck.
The suburbs are being built up. I'm proud to take out of town guests shopping near the McKinley mall, and all the new development on Mile strip road. Great area!
I love the elmwood strip area. Great dining!
Honestly, there isn't much to do in Buffalo besides nightlife and sporting events. Especially during the six months of winter. I'm more of the warm weather outdoors type, so I'm cooped up, and at the age of 26, its affecting my health.
Finally the area is choked with taxes. I own two properties, taxes most anywhere else would be half.
My girlfriend and I will take our advanced college degrees to Arizona, and put them to use there. Just a matter of time I suppose.

You say there is little to do in Buffalo outside of nightlife and sporting events... I disagree somewhat, but... What would you prefer to see here? What does Buffalo lack? What can be done to make Buffalo a lively entertainment area with a variety of things to do year round? Where's the vision? That's something developers have lacked around here...

I thought Buffalo's arts scene is very strong and recognized. It's proximity to Niagara Falls doesn't hurt. I would think that they have quite a few festivals there too.

Every day there are festivals in the summer - primarily, but even in the winter. Buffalo houses some of the nations largest events like the Taste of Buffalo - the largest 2 day food festival in the country. Of course the renowned - National Buffalo Wing Festival, among others to name a few of our great festivals.
- One of the greatest art scenes in the country, and growing. There is an extremity of things to do in Buffalo - you just have to discover it and see if it fits your tasting. Sure there could be more things to do - I have great visions for Buffalo to be a real happening place like none other. - Unique in its own way.
Being just a mere 15 - 20 minute drive from Buffalo, Niagara Falls has brought people both in and out of the city as well, with its 17 million annual tourists, Buffalo is now trying to capture some of those people and lure them into the big city where there is much to do.
We are the City of Festivals:

My first question is : what does the Yahoo person really know of the city/area? it is always my first question when Buffalo gets a bum rap.
The city was a heck of a lot worse when I moved here in the 1960s. You couldn't walk Chippewa ( it was all drunks -- and worse). Riots had just happened at the colleges. The Elmwood village was nothing trendy..... and the blue collar jons were leaving. The pluses? No rail to downtown then. No megamalls in the burbs (University Plaza was actually a nice place as was Northtown and Southgate and sevearl malls now torn down). 7 Dept. stores downtown. [OTOH, my hubby ( born here and never lived outside Erie County) said the place was great when he was a kid in the 1940s/50s.] Most areas were decent ( I loved working on the upper west side and it was thriving in the 1970s).... everything is relevant. It is relevant to your age, life experience, expectations... if you think the place is rotten, it will be a self-fullfilling prophecy. If you think it is good, that will be seen [The old glass half full or empty scenario]. I will stay just for the wonderful people.

more than deserved reputation...
I lived in Buffalo for 40 years and thank god me and my family finally left 10 years ago....someone PLEASE answer this question....
Can you buy a shirt and tie downtown?! (no)
If somehow you live downtown can you walk to
a market to buy a head of lettuce?! (no)
Until then, Buffalo will be the sh*thole it has been and
always been.
Why do you think that the Buffalo.com website does not
allow access for web comments like every other web based
news....I'll tell you, because more people have LEFT BUFFALO
than actually currently live there. The majority of comments
would likely come from those who have been fortunate enough to
leave and that commentary would generally not be complimentary...

You are the one who has failed to see the truth. The answer is actually yes to both of your questions. You are such a typical failture in terms of what Buffalo really is - TODAY.
