But the fact that our city loses 1.5% of its population every year means that there a HUGE problems.

I don't know if you have ever moved before, it is one of the toughest things. Moving a block away is hard work, moving to another city is ever bigger. You lose your friends, you feel lost for at least a year.

I have lived in four cities, Amherst is probably my second favorite (my favorite was Montreal, my least favorite was Cornwall Ontario). And it really stinks because as a business major I have two choices. I can stay in Buffalo where all my friends are, and work for $15,000 a year less, or move somewhere else, and make alot more.

I know, cost of living, but there are cities with cost of living about the same as Buffalo, but taxation rates at a quarter of our rate that we pay here.

Alot of Southern towns are very affordable, and hiring new workers, as well as have low taxes (Greenville, Charleston, Decateur (AL), Knoxville, Jacksonville, Roswell, Willington (NC), Newport News, etc)
You bring up some good points, thanks for sharing, I'm not sure how people like us can stand up and somehow lower taxes in the state and our region, it seems impossible. Maybe someday, but right now I don't blame anyone for truly wanting to make to move out of NYS for those reasons. I'll do the best I can, I hope others will step up too...

Well good! I hope that works out well - I can't wait to see if there will be a good change for our city mayor...

wow! back when I living at home - i always thought that the War memorial looked very archaic .

If my wife could find a job paying her wage there - we would probably move back.

I wish my boy could hit the tobaggon chutes in Chestnut Ridge park - I miss snow more than anything

Wow that's embarrassing

why? It's built on the ocean and has military base there plus the weather is fairly moderate.

I think he saying it's embarrassing for this reason

In 1900, Buffalo population was 352,000, Va. Beach was 11,000

In 1950, 580,000, vs 40,000

In 1970 462,000 vs 172,000

In 1990 328,000 vs 393,000

And now 272,000 vs 440,000

In 1890 Buffalo's population was more or less what it is now ~272K, but the US's population was about 63,000,000. So we have added almost 250M to the population, yet in sense Buffalo is seeing none of that growth. It is pretty depressing.

It is indeed embarrassing when a town that had a strong infrastructure gets totally over taken by little more than a former beach/tourism town.

I don't know, Pittsburgh's industries were arguably harder hit than Buffalo's in the 1960's and 70's but somehow Pittsburgh managed to get back on track. We suffered some bad leadership, but the good news is that bad leadership is never permanent. We may always find a great mayor who will find innovative ways to turn our city around. We can probably be the next Pittsburgh (a former industrial "rust belt" city that turned around). All we need is some sound fiscal policy and we'll be well on our way.
